Fire Damages House In Rivermont, Dog Rescued
posted April 16, 2006

No injuries were reported in connection with a house fire in Rivermont on Easter Sunday.

The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 3:08 p.m. and responded to 3947 Azalean Dr. with several fire companies.

Battalion Chief Thaddeus Morton said the front portion of the house was engulfed in flames when the first firefighters arrived on the scene. Chief Morton said the flames climbed the wall on the porch and made their way inside the attic.

Chattanooga firefighters quickly attacked the flames from the inside and out, and managed to keep the flames from doing much damage to the interior of the house.

While the firefighters were busy extinguishing the flames, they were informed by the owner that his dog was still inside. Some firefighters conducted a search in the house, located the dog, and carried the pet safely outside uninjured.

The dollar loss was estimated at around $30,000.

Captain James Whitmire with the Fire Investigation Division said the fire appears to have started on the front porch, in the vicinity of a plastic planter. What exactly sparked the blaze remains undetermined and under investigation. The owner of the house was not home at the time of the fire.

The house is insured and the victim said he would be staying with family members overnight.
