Incumbent Sheriff John Cupp and Democrat Billy Long took big election victories Tuesday night. The Cupp win over Andy Derryberry was 8,356 to 4,898. Billy Long defeated Hank DeArman 6,464 to 1,740.

City Judge Sherry Paty held off a challenge from Gerald Webb. She had 6,924 to 5,853.

Tom Crutchfield won a close contest over Steven Grant - the biggest fundraiser in the election - in the race to replace Circuit Court Judge Sam Payne. The vote was 4,733 to 4,374. Jeff Hollingsworth is the GOP candidate. He had 8,959 votes.

Debbie Gaines, former administrative assistant to the County Commission, won in the race to take the place of Yusuf Hakeem on the City Council. Mr. Hakeem joined the state Parole Board.
Ms. Gaines had 900 votes to 302 for Quenston Coleman. Eric Colen had 195 and Edward L. Williams Sr. had 114.

On the County Commission, John Allen Brooks defeated incumbent Lou Miller 742 to 437 in District 6.

Commissioner Richard Casavant held off Republican challenger Jimmy Holloway in District 2. The challenger took several precincts, but the incumbent won big on Lookout Mountain, Signal Mountain and Riverview. It was Casavant 1,678 to 760 for Holloway. Joe Dumas is running as an Independent.

District 1 incumbent Fred Skillern of Soddy-Daisy beat challenger Laura Oakley 1,414 to 602. Commissioner Skillern won every precinct.

Larry Henry won over Red Burrows, who hammered the incumbent on his vote to raise the property tax. It was Henry 1,314 and Burrows 614, with Henry winning all the precincts in District 7.

In District 5, Greg Beck defeated Cynthia Coleman 1,802 to 798. Commissioner Beck was appointed after JoAnne Favors moved to the Legislature. Rep. Favors endorsed Ms. Coleman. Rev. Bernie Miller is the Republican candidate. He had 321 votes.

Jim Coppinger, former city fire chief, won the District 3 race to replace Charlotte Vandergriff. He had 1,593 votes to 1,193 for Terry Conley and 58 for J. Al Smith. There are no Democratic candidates.

Sheriff Cupp won by a wide margin over former Chief Deputy Andy Derryberry. Billy Long, former lieutenant in the sheriff's department, won handily over Hank DeArman.

Sheriff Cupp, who at age 75 has served 12 years as sheriff, had waited until late to announce whether he would run. Then he did not advertise until the final weeks.

Mr. Derryberry concluded his run for sheriff on Wednesday by thanking friends and family gathered at his campaign headquarters on Cherry Street.

He said, “I never entered this race to run against anyone. Rather, I wanted to offer the voters of Hamilton County the opportunity for change and a higher level of professionalism for the community as well as for the officers working at the Sheriff’s Office. It has been an honor to have the support of so many across the county. I was not defeated by my opponent, but by the power of incumbency.”

He added, “I am going to take a few days off and then see what the next chapter of my life holds. Each step along the way has been a gift from God and with the support of my family and long time friends, I am still extremely blessed.”

Mr. Derryberry said he would not be actively supporting any candidate in the August general election.

Mr. Long, celebrating at Democratic headquarters at Patten Parkway, said, "The county voters sent a big message. I feel like we are going to win Aug. 3 and put Mr. Cupp out of office."

He said of the upcoming campaign, "We're ready. We are looking forward to an exciting campaign. The people of Hamilton County will be proud of our campaign."

Judge Paty, who held her celebration at the Stone Fort Inn on 10th Street, said, "I'm just thankful that it was not as close as last time." She barely edged Mr. Webb, an assistant district attorney, in a prior race in which a second black candidate, James Anderson, was contending.

Judge Paty, who will be in office for the next eight years, said, "I could not have done it without my supporters. I especially appreciate Judge Moon's political advice and friendship."

General Sessions Court Judge Bob Moon, said, "Sherry Paty is the consummate judge. She is fair, honest, knowledgeable and experienced; she is the total judicial package. The voters rewarded her today for who she is, what she does and all that she represents."

Attorney Crutchfield, who got vocal backing from former Mayor Jon Kinsey, said opponent Grant "ran a high-level campaign."

He said, "We've got a tough fight ahead, but we've got the momentum. We'll see Mr. Hollingsworth in August."

John Brooks, who has long been active in Democratic politics but was in his first race, said he owed much to several core supporters - his wife, Jan, along with Paul Smith, Terry Lee and Alice O'Day."

Mr. Brooks, who is an attorney and is a former county Democratic Party chairman, said, "The people liked what I said about education and about better jobs."

Mrs. Miller had taken over the post after the death of her husband, longtime Commissioner Ben Miller.

The turnout was 13.68 percent - 24,931 of 182,250 eligible voters.
