Election Office Concerned On 2 "Extra" Votes At Downtown Precinct
posted May 15, 2006

Election officials are looking into two "extra" votes at the new Downtown precinct.

Bud Knowles, administrator, said there were 160 votes counted for the precinct that was re-established on the West Side.

But he said there were just 158 voters who signed in, 158 who picked up ballot applications and 158 who left stubs.

Mr. Knowles said in order to count the actual number of ballots, the office would have to get a court order because of privacy issues.

Attorney Jerry Summers said it might be difficult to obtain such an order because no candidate has asked for any type recount.

However, attorney Summers said it is important for the office to determine what happened at the precinct.

He said, "This commission got embarrassed in the Mackey-Cotton race four years ago. The next election will be more hotly contested. There might be a race that is decided by just a few votes."
