Quick work by Chattanooga firefighters on Friday night saved a Hixson apartment building from total destruction by fire.
The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 8:16 p.m. and responded with six fire companies to Northtowne Village Apartments at 1011 Gadd Road.
The first firefighters on the scene could see thick, black smoke coming from Apartment 405. The firefighters forced their way in through the front door and found the kitchen engulfed in flames. The firefighters aggressively attacked the fire and had it out in minutes. The incident commander initially called for a second alarm response to bring in an additional six fire companies, but the second alarm was canceled when it was clear that the fire had been extinguished.
The fire damage was contained to the kitchen area, but the rest of the apartment did sustain smoke damage. The unit directly below had some water damage, and the unit above had a little smoke damage. The total dollar loss was estimated at around $75,000.
The residents of Apt. 405 were not home at the time of the fire. Firefighters and Chattanooga police officers evacuated the other 19 apartment units in the building as a precaution. No injuries were reported.
Firefighters believe the fire started in the kitchen, but what exactly sparked the blaze is undetermined. Volunteers with the Red Cross were called in to provide assistance to the victims. The resident of Apt. 405 said she did have renter's insurance.
