Duplex Damaged By Fire On Delong
posted May 31, 2006

Chattanooga firefighters were called to the scene of a duplex fire Tuesday night at 3305 Delong.

Willie Reed, 77, said he was having a problem with his air conditioner tripping a breaker. It happened again Tuesday night shortly after 8 p.m. He went to the breaker box on the back porch to flip the breaker on again, and, when he returned to his bedroom, he saw flames coming from the window air conditioner.

Mr. Reed escaped unharmed and called 911.

The fire department arrived moments later and managed to contain the fire damage to the bedroom and a portion of the attic. The rest of the unit had smoke and water damage.

The loss was estimated at $12,000.

The other side of the duplex was vacant.

Battalion Chief Mike Baronavski said the cause of the fire appears to be accidental, most likely from an electrical malfunction.

Mr. Reed said he did not have renter's insurance.
