Family Escapes Burning House In Lookout Valley
posted June 1, 2006

Fire forced a family of three from their home early Thursday morning in Lookout Valley.

Wanda Hughes told firefighters that around 2:30 a.m. she got up to go to the bathroom and found her son Robert lying on the floor having a seizure.

At the same time, the curtains located between the living room and kitchen were on fire. Ms. Hughes immediately woke up her nephew and together the two helped Robert out of the house.

The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 2:40 a.m. and responded to 47 Hemlock Circle with several fire companies. Captain Steve Everett and his firefighters with Engine 20 were the first to arrive on the scene, and flames were already shooting through the roof. The firefighters eventually got the blaze under control, but the damage was extensive.

The loss was estimated at $25,000 for the structure and contents. A pet dog perished in the blaze. The Red Cross was called in to provide assistance to the family.

Senior Firefighter Henry McElvain with the Fire Investigation Division said the cause of the fire appears to be accidental, though what exactly sparked the blaze remains undetermined.
