On June 29, Lupton City residents received notification that their post office would close on July 3. Lupton City is a unique community because no homes have mail boxes. Everyone depended on the post office to send and receive mail.
The 250+ families who live in "the village" now have to travel over four miles to the Hixson Post office to get their mail.
Some citizens of Lupton City are retired mill workers or widows of mill workers. Some do not drive or have the ability to leave their home every day.
This week, residents began signing a petition requesting their local post office to return or for mailboxes to be installed at their homes. Many have called local, state, and federal officials, including the United States Postal Service at 1-800-ASK-USPS.
From July 5 until July 11, those who paid for 24-hour Lupton City post office boxes were denied that service. They could only receive their mail if they could make it to the Hixson office during office hours. One resident was told only Lupton city postal officials could get his mail, Hixson employees cannot.
On Tuesday, temporary post office boxes were set up at the Hixson Post Office for Lupton City residents and new keys were given out. Residents were told to continue to use their Lupton City zip code and Post Office Box number.
Lupton City was built as a model mill village in the 1920s and 1930s for employees of Dixie Spinning Mills.
