The Hamilton County Election Commission has called a special meeting to deal with a citizen petition aimed at keeping curbside recycling in Chattanooga.
The meeting will be next Friday at 8 a.m. at the Election Commission Building, 514 East 4th St.
If the measure makes the Nov. 7 ballot, city residents will be asked if they want to continue curbside recycling at least one day a week.
The city is currently planning to end curbside recycling in October, saying it would be better to set up a number of transfer stations where citizens can take recyclable items.
Election officials said an initial petition that was found to have faulty wording has been withdrawn and a new one entered. It will have to be approved by the election panel.
Frank DePinto, who is leading the petition drive, said Election Commission attorney Jerry Summers worked with him in getting the correct wording. He said it has been approved by the state.
Mr. DePinto said he will have a new batch of petitions printed.
The group will have to collect over 16,000 names of valid city voters to force the initiative.
