Barker, Horace N. (Madisonville) posted July 26, 2006 Dr. Horace N. Barker, 91, died Monday evening, July 24, 2006, at his home following a long illness. He was born in Muscadine, Al., on Feb. 19, 1915, and grew up in Haleyville, Al. He was a graduate of Haleyville High School, the University of Chattanooga and Drew University Seminary in Madison, N.J. He received honorary doctorate degrees from Emory and Henry College and the University of Chattanooga. He became an ordained Methodist minister, served in the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church for many years and pastored churches in Dunlap, Madisonville, Jefferson City and Abingdon, Va. He was president of Hiwassee College from 1955 to 1980. He spent his life working for the education of youth from the Appalachian Region. In the 1960's he began to develop Laurel Mountain Lakes, now an established residential community. He was a member of Buckner Memorial United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Viola Barker, three sisters and four brothers. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Kathaleen Batchelor Barker; daughter, Ann Barker, Vonore; son, Horace Barker Jr., of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Juana R. Barker and Rose Barker; great-grandson, Gabriel Barker, all of Knoxville; sister, Catherine Coleman, of Miami, Fl.; brother, Evan Barker, of Birmingham; sister-in-law, Lovie Mae Barker, of Maryville; brother-in-law, the Rev. Delbert Miles, of Birmingham; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Buckner Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Hiwassee College Cemetery. His body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Hiwassee College, the Horace and Kathaleen Barker Scholarship Fund at Hiwassee College, Buckner Memorial United Methodist Church or the East Tennessee Alzheimers Association. His family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Buckner Memorial United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, Madisonville. |
