Heavy Turnout Expected On Election Day Thursday
posted July 31, 2006

Election Administrator Bud Knowles said he expects from 30,000-34,000 Hamilton County voters to turn out on election day Thursday.

That will go along with the 16,136 who voted early. Early voting ended Saturday.

Mr. Knowles said, "We are urging those who did not vote early to come out on election day."

He said the early vote turnout was over 6,000 more than during a similar election four years ago.

Among the watched contests are the U.S. Senate Republican primary battle that includes former Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker, along with Ed Bryant and Van Hilleary.

John Cupp is also battling to keep the sheriff post against Democrat Billy Long and independent Dave Alverson.

Among the County Commission races is the effort by Democrat John Bailes to turn out incumbent Republican Curtis Adams in District 8.

Mr. Knowles said the election count will be delayed by about 30 minutes since ballots will not be tabulated until they are hand delivered to the election office at Fourth and Lindsay. He said new voting machines designed for the handicapped are not yet set up so the results can be sent remotely from the polls.

He said only six people used the handicapped machines during early voting. That included himself and another election office employee.
