New Holiday Inn Express To Be Built Downtown
posted August 14, 2006

A new Holiday Inn Express is set to be built downtown.

The four-story hotel with 93 rooms will be constructed on MLK Boulevard at the site of the former Downtown Dodge.

The city-county Planning Commission on Monday recommended approval by the project by the Elite Hotels Group. The case next goes to the City Council.

Charles King is the architect.

He said it should take nine months to a year to build.

Bonnie Currey of the AIM Center, which is located next door, said she had concerns about the project.

She said the hotel is set to be built facing the nearby interstate rather than MLK Boulevard. She said the AIM Center would be looking at the rear of the hotel.

Don Moon, Planning Commission member, said he would recommend that the hotel face MLK Boulevard instead and that parking be in the rear.
