Construction is well underway for the first Habitat for Humanity house to be built by Chattanooga firefighters, and it's only been two days.
At the end of day two, the walls are up and roof trusses are in place.
The firefighters are providing all of the labor - on their own time - to construct the house. They are also partially funding the project themselves, but they are seeking donations from area residents and businesses to help purchase the materials needed to build the house.
Mayor Ron Littlefield was set to work on the project on Friday afternoon.
He said, “I am very excited to serve as a volunteer considering the outcome of all efforts combined; this finished project will mean one more Chattanooga family will have a home. Thanks to the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga for twenty years of excellent service. As a result of their hard work almost 200 families are now living in their own homes.”
Jan Varnell, executive director of the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga, said, “This home is considered a 'blitz build' due to the quickness in which it is being built. Normally the timeframe is 12 weeks. However, since the fire fighters have diligently worked on this house every day for the past week on their own time, the expected timeframe for completion is now four weeks or less.”
