Late yesterday afternoon my wife returned from running errands and asked, "What's the deal with WDOD? They are playing good music this afternoon." Since I haven't listened to WDOD in many weeks, I was pleasantly surprised to tune into some very nice music.
Far be it from me to even hint of "I told you so" along with dozens of others last year when the format was rumored to be changed, but I think it was mentioned that the liberal talk format would be a financial disaster in this radio market, and far worse would mean the elimination of the peaceful, tuneful, harmonic music of the big bands, great pop soloists and choral groups from the local airways. It was also mentioned that after the expected short life of the new format, it would then be too late to recapture the unparalleled, smooth and expert talent of one of Chattanooga's most gifted radio personalities. Mr. Freudenburg found a solid home at WDYN/SPAN (FM 89.7) and now uses his talents in the only format more worthy of his abilities. He is a real professional in news reporting, insightful commentary, and has a top quality ear for excellent programming. I miss his contributions to the popular music scene in Chattanooga.
It is nice to have the comfortable sounds back on the air. That was my objection to the original change of format, no one was playing the songs I liked anymore. I have little objection to opposite political views being expressed in a civilized manner. You know, Al Franken is really rather humorous, and occasionally made some solid political comments. I never listened to the others. As noted in other editorials, it has boiled down to the financial bottom line. I will certainly listen for local advertisers and do my best to support those who sponsor the kind of radio programming I enjoy. I always did that for HeyEarl.
