WTCI Provides Political Coverage Of U. S. Senate Race
posted October 3, 2006

WTCI will air a series of debates and a one-on-one interview program with the candidates running in the Nov. 7 election to replace Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. Bob Corker, former Chattanooga mayor, and Rep. Harold Ford Jr., a U.S. congressman from Memphis are seeking the position.

“As a community PBS station, it is our responsibility to provide programming to help the citizens of this community make an informed decision when they cast their votes on Nov. 7,” said Paul Grove, WTCI President and CEO. “Before you decide, tune in to WTCI.”

WTCI will begin political coverage with the special program Conversations with the Candidates: Bob Corker and Harold Ford Jr., hosted by author and Chattanooga Times Free Press columnist David Magee. The program will air on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 8 p.m. A repeat of the program will air at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8.

This special is the only of its kind being produced by a television station in Tennessee and is being carried by PBS stations statewide. The candidates will be sharing their thoughts without rebuttal from their opponent in a format that will allow the viewer an opportunity to discover what they are passionate about and the issues they’ll be focusing on in Washington D.C.

WTCI will be the only Chattanooga media outlet to televise the first debate between Corker and Ford. It will be broadcast live on WTCI from Memphis on Sat., Oct. 7, at 8 p.m. A debate from Chattanooga will be broadcast on tape delay at 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10 and at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15. WTCI is currently working towards obtaining the rights to broadcast the final debate between Corker and Ford in Nashville on Saturday, Oct. 28.
