Police Blotter: Clerk Follows Shoplifter, Gets Tag Number
posted November 3, 2006

A clerk who said she saw a woman take clothes off hangers and put the items under her shirt said she followed the woman and got her tag number.

Kathy Sexton said she observed the black female shoplifting at the store at 3801 Tennessee Ave. in St. Elmo. She said the woman went outside without paying.

She said she confronted her in the parking lot and there was a verbal dispute, then the woman got in a black Volvo and left. The clerk followed her, but finally lost her in traffic.

The vehicle tag came back to Reba Hunter, 4601 Chandler Ave., police said.

An officer said the black Volvo with the same tag number was found at the residence. But he could not get anyone to come to the door.

Craig Crawford said he parked a work van at 1400 Chestnut St. with the keys under the front floor mat.

He said a black male was seen jumping into the van and driving off.

The van has the wording "Crawford Plumbing" on the side. Copper tubing was on top when the man drove off.

Officers found there had been a break-in at the East Brainerd Club at 8115 East Brainerd Road. The front glass was broken out.

Someone pried open a metal cash box and also pried their way into some cabinets.

Jan Humphreys of Terra Vista Drive said two male yellow Labrador Retrievers were stolen from her back porch.

They were six weeks old and worth $200 each.

Police checked out damage to an apartment at 4715 Bonny Oaks Dr. that was leased by FEMA.

A maintenance worker found the front door was kicked in.

The renter, Demario Davis, was located in another unit. He said he had kicked the door in about a month ago because his key was locked inside.

It was found that the inside of the apartment was "destroyed." There were holes in all the walls and a back window was bashed out. Davis admitted doing the damage, saying he had "released his anger."

Davis is to work out repayment with the landlord.
