Just after 1 p.m., Chattanooga firefighters responded to a house fire at 6911 Echo Glen Dr.
While en route, Captain Kinney Short said that smoke could be seen coming from the neighborhood. Captain Short said that when they arrived, there was heavy smoke billowing from the gables of the roof. He said there was a car in the driveway, and a neighbor thought someone was home.
With that information, Engine 22's crew forced entry into the front door and immediately began a search of the residence. After a primary search revealed that no one was home, firefighters began an aggressive attack on the fire.
A water supply line was laid from Boy Scout Road by Squad 2. Other fire companies assisting were Quint 19, Quint 16, and Battalion Chief Mike Baronavski was in command. Though the blaze had a head start, it only took fire crews about 30 minutes to contain the blaze.
The fire appeared to have started in the garage and traveled to the bedroom above the garage, then up to the attic, where most of the fire damage occurred.
While most of the home was saved from the fire, there was extensive smoke and water damage. The total fire loss is estimated at approximately $70,000.
The fire appears to be accidental in nature, possibly due to electrical malfunction. The exact cause is being investigated by Fire Investigator Henry McElvain.
The owners Gregory Holloway, 53, and Mildred Holloway, 50, and their granddaughter Kara Marie, 5, who often stays with them, were not home at the time of the fire, and no one was injured.
Unfortunately, a family pet was lost in the blaze.
Mr. and Mrs. Holloway are being cared for by family members.
