Fire Leaves Family Homeless In East Lake posted December 10, 2006 No injuries were reported in connection with a house fire in East Lake on Saturday night. The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 6:54 p.m. and responded to 3510 4th Ave. with four fire companies. Captain David Barie with Engine 9 said smoke was coming from the gable vents to the attic and from the front door when his company arrived on the scene. Following the smoke to its heaviest area, Captain Barie said the fire was located behind a breaker box. The fire had extended into the wall adjacent to the kitchen and up into the attic. Captain Barie said their firefighting operation was hampered initially because there was still electrical power to the house, and the fire was directly behind the breaker box. The firefighters could not wait for EPB crews to arrive on the scene, so they pulled the electrical meter themselves so they could fight the fire. When that was accomplished, it took the firefighters roughly 15 minutes to get the fire under control. Captain Barie estimated the loss at around $20,000. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was listed as accidental, most likely from an electrical malfunction. Four to five adults reportedly lived in the rented house. Volunteers with the American Red Cross were called in to provide assistance to the victims. |
