Girl Hospitalized After Clothes Catch Fire
posted December 19, 2006

A ten year old girl was injured Monday night when her clothes caught on fire. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. in a house at 2008 Cushman St., where several youths were braiding each other's hair.

Captain Lesley Morgan with the Fire Investigation Division said the girl reportedly held a cigarette lighter to strands of synthetic hair that were being used, and when she did, the hair burst into flames. Those flames somehow spread to the child's clothing. The other girls in the room had the youth try the stop, drop and roll technique, but when that failed, they ripped the burning shirt off of the victim.

Captain Morgan said the victim was transported by Hamilton County EMS to Erlanger Medical Center, where she was treated for 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns to approximately 10% of her body, mostly on her chest and arms. An Erlanger spokeswoman said the victim was treated and released. The incident is still being investigated by Captain Morgan.
