by Judy Frank
posted December 21, 2006

A standing-room-only crowd packed the cafeteria at the Community Kitchen for the Homeless on Thursday morning for a memorial service honoring homeless individuals in and around Chattanooga who died this year.

This is the second year that Chattanooga has joined in the National Memorial Day for the Homeless Who Have Died, according to Brother Ron Fender of the Brotherhood of St. Gregory.

The 15 individuals remembered here included Ajay M. Mohan, 26, who jumped to his death from the Walnut Street Bridge in June, according to news accounts at the time.

Others honored included Jennifer Bell, Willie Billingsley, Thomas Caldwell, James Collins, Brenda Fuller, Carl Jones, Leo Lewis, Kurt Lytle, Charles Mahew, Marion Mason, Joseph Meyer, John Newton Jr. and Stoney Robinson.

In addition to dozens of homeless men and women, the local service was attended by Mayor Ron Littlefield, several members of the Chattanooga City Council, and employees of the Homeless Health Care Clinic of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department and other agencies that serve the homeless.
