Spartans Outlast Mocs 67-57
posted January 14, 2007

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Kendall Toney’s 17 points gave the University of North Carolina Greensboro the balance they needed to go with Kyle Hines’16 points and eight rebounds as the Spartans used a 12-2 run late in the second half to claim a 67-57 win over the UTC Mocs.

A Marcus Watts lay-in tied the game at 48-48 with 9:41 to play before UNCG commenced the game-clinching run. The Spartan defense was the key to the run, getting four blocked shots during the 5:45 stretch which saw the lead grow to double-figures. Three of those blocks sparked the transition game and led to a UNCG score.

The Mocs (8-11, 1-6 SoCon) held Hines to only four field goals and below his season marks in both scoring and rebounding. Kendall Toney, who made a school-record eight 3-pointers against NC State, made five from behind the arc.

Marcus Watts, in the starting lineup for the second straight game, led the Mocs with 11 points. Casey Long and Nicchaeus Doaks both added 10. Doaks snagged eight rebounds to lead the team.

The Mocs defense limited UNCG (8-9, 5-2 SoCon) to 39.2 percent shooting, but could only manage 37.9 percent on offense. UNCG was 16-of-24 from the free throw line, while the Mocs only got to the line 11 times, making eight.

Chattanooga will stay on the road, playing at Elon Monday night at 7 p.m. The Phoenix claimed its first SoCon road win of the season earlier today with a 64-63 win at Appalachian State.

NOTES:

Casey Long passed Oliver Morton for 18th place on the career scoring list. With three more rebounds he will also pass Morton on the career rebound list.

Keddric Mays made two three-point field goals, giving him 165 in his career. He needs three more to pass Wes Moore for second all-time.
