Stanley Lawrence Leventhal died at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2003, following a long illness. He was 80.
He was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and the son of the late Marvin and Ida Russ Leventhal.
He attended Park Place Grammar School and graduated from Baylor School in 1940. He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1944, having joined the Navy V-12 program in 1943.
He was commissioned an ensign in the Navy in 1944 at Northwestern University Midshipman School. His last semester in school was at the University of the South.
Upon being commissioned, he was assigned to an LST and served for three years in the South Pacific during World War II. His ship went through six major naval engagements in the South Pacific during that time.
He was honorably discharged in 1947 in New Orleans. He worked until his retirement for ZEP Manufacturing Co. of Atlanta as a chemical salesman for Middle and East Tennessee.
He frequently was recognized as one of the top salesmen in the country in his field. He retired in 1990, as his illness did not permit him to work longer.
He is survived by his two daughters, Janis L. Barrali and (son-in-law, Richard Barrali), Signal Mountain, and Maureen L. Friedman of West Bloomfield, Mich.; two sons, Michael Leventhal of Knoxville and David Leventhal of Atlanta; five grandchildren, Kristin Barrali of Boston, Mass., Nichole Barrali of Savannah, Ga., and Maggie, Ben and Manda Knight of West Bloomfield, Mich.; two great-grandsons, Austin and Colton Knight of West Bloomfield, Mich.; his brother, Deene Leventhal, and sister-in-law, Mickey Leventhal of Chattanooga.
He was a member of Mizpah Congregation, the Masons and the Shriners.
His interment will be at 11 a.m. today, April 29, at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Rabbi Posner will hold graveside services.
In lieu of flower, contributions may be sent to the Multiple Sclerosis Sclerosis (MS) Society and the Siskin Foundation.
