Mrs. Christine “Cricket” Ashley, 73, of 6600 North Fairview Road, Hixson, died on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 9, 2004.

She had been a housewife and mother since the age of 17. Her husband, James Raymond Ashley, pastored Methodist churches in Hamilton and Rhea counties during the 1950s and 60s.

Her son, Jim Ashley, was the church news editor at the Chattanooga Free Press during the late 1980s and during most of the 1990s.

For a brief period during the 1970s, Mrs. Ashley was with Welcome Wagon, which welcomed new residents to the Scenic City.

She was a longtime member and choir member at Fairview United Methodist Church on the Big Ridge in Hixson.

Born in Dekalb County, Ala., on June 21, 1930, Mrs. Ashley was a daughter of the late R.D. “Doc” Adkins and Margie Lee Adkins. Her family also lived several years on Sand Mountain, and for a while during the 1930s, her family lived next to the historic Cravens House on Lookout Mountain.

She was also preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Louise Adkins, and her sister-in-law, Naomi Adkins.

Survivors in addition to her husband and son include the following: her daughter, Wanda Barger and her husband Ben, both of Madisonville, Tenn.; her daughter, Susan Day and her husband, Ronnie, both of Hixson; her daughter-in-law, Kay Ashley of Soddy-Daisy; her brother, Roy Adkins of Jacksonville; her brother, Clayton Adkins and his wife Betty, both of Chattanooga; her grandchildren, Shane (Holly) Ashley, Brian (Misty) Barger, Matt Barger and Christi Day; her great-grandchildren, Isabella Ashley, Emily, Megan and Blair Barger; her nieces and nephews, Steve and Fred Adkins and Pam Williams, all of Jacksonville, Fla., and Clay Adkins of Cleveland, Tenn.

Services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel, with the Rev. Henry Groseclose officiating. The service will include a CD program of photos and music reflecting her life.

Interment will follow in a mausoleum at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
