David Earl Hughes, 48, of Chattanooga, died Sunday, August 22, 2004, at his home.
Born in Peoria, Illinois, David Earl had lived in Chattanooga for the past 30 years. He was a member of the Maplewood Baptist Church in Nashville, Tenn. David Earl was a well-known radio personality in Chattanooga for 30 years having worked for US101 for 13 years. During his career with US101 David Earl was instrumental in US101 winning the CMA Award for radio eight years. In 1994 and 1999, David Earl received the CMA Radio Personality of the Year Award.
He was an avid supporter of the St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital and helped US101 raise millions of dollars for the children of St. Jude’s. David Earl was always active for Christmas for Kids in helping giving gifts for underprivileged children.
He was an honorary member of the Catoosa County Fire Department and was preceded in death by his father, Sidney D. Hughes.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Janow Hughes; sons, Steven David Hughes and Michael Cody Hughes, both of Chattanooga; step-daughters, Heather Nicole Lee and Hannah Elizabeth Lee, both of Chattanooga; mother and step-father, Mary and Ed Nicholson, Springfield, TN; grandson, Michael Isaac Hughes, Chattanooga; sisters, Mary Louise Green, Nashville, Suzanne Hughes Baker, Dickson, TN; brother, James Michael Hughes, Nashville, and six nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Memorial Baptist Tabernacle, 905 Hogan Road, Rossville, with Rev. Herschel Woodburn, Rev. Doug Hawkins, Sammy George, and Bill Poindexter officiating.
Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.
Active pallbearers will be Danny Shirley, Mike Gard, Ronald Roach, Tim Lewis, Anthony Hudgins, Zak Evans, Cody McCarver, Ronnie Palmer, and Stanley Matthews. Honorary pallbearers will be The Board Members.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital.
