Vickey Swaim Grob, R.N., the retired Director of Nurses at Newell Hospital died at her Chattanooga home on Wednesday, August 4, 2004. She was a Chattanooga resident for more than 50 years. Mrs. Grob would have been 90 years old on August 29, 2004.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Charles "Don" Grob, Sr., retired Assistant Safety Director of the Electric Power Board of Chattanooga. He was a 32-degree Mason, and member of the Alhambra Shrine and the Scottish Rite.

Mrs. Grob was a native of Scottsboro, AL. She was the seventh of nine children of the late Hugh Franklin Swaim and Margaret Carter Swaim, who were among the original founders of the Scottsboro community.

Mrs. Grob graduated from Snead College in Boaz, AL and the Newell Hospital School of Nursing, Chattanooga. After graduation, she was affiliated with the Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA.

A Registered Nurse, Mrs. Grob joined Newell Hospital as a staff nurse and held positions of increasing responsibility before being named Director of Nurses. She served in that position until her retirement. Prior to joining the staff at Newell Hospital, she served as a staff nurse at the Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago, IL and later as a staff nurse at the TVA Kentucky Dam Hospital, Gilbertsville, KY. She was a member of the District 4 Tennessee Nurses Association.

Following her retirement from Newell Hospital, she served as the Educational Coordinator for Hospital Affiliates, Inc.

Mrs. Grob was a 50-year member of the Betsy Ross Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. She was a member and committee chairman of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. She was an American Red Cross Volunteer for over 20 years and an American Heart Association Volunteer for many years as well. She and her husband were regular volunteers at the Chattanooga Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

Mrs. Grob was a member of the Red Bank United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and was a member of the Carver-Tarwater Sunday School Class. Members of the Carver-Tarwater Sunday School Class are honorary pallbearers.

Mrs. Grob and her late husband, Donald C. Grob, Sr. were very fond of our 50th state - Hawaii - and organized many charter trips to Hawaii originating from Chattanooga.

She is survived by her son, Donald C. Grob, Jr. of Chattanooga; her daughter, Dr. Diane Grob Schmidt of Cincinnati, OH; son-in-law, Dr. W. Warren Schmidt of Cincinnati, OH; a sister, Mrs. Earlene Swaim Storey of Huntsville, AL, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her four brothers, Hugh F. Swaim, William Swaim, Carter Swaim, Robert Moses Swaim, and three sisters, Vesta Swaim Hembree, Odessa Swaim Marsh, and Estelle Swaim Porter.

The service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Spell officiating. The family will receive friends from 5–7 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga, the Red Bank United Methodist Church, or the American Cancer Society.
