Ten McCallie Alumni Receive Achievement Awards

Ten McCallie alumni were honored with Alumni Achievement Awards over Reunion Weekend. The awards are presented on Oct. 1 to McCallie graduates who have shown outstanding accomplishments in a chosen career.

They are:

William Acker III '60 of Anniston, Ala., is co-founder of Private Capital Corporation, a venture capital investment company. The company has led equity financings that have created in excess of 5,000 jobs in the Southeast through more than 50 portfolio companies. Mr. Acker graduated from Vanderbilt University and completed post-graduate studies at the University of Alabama and the London Business School. He is a former chairman of the McCallie Board of Visitors and has served on the boards of close to a dozen educational and arts organizations.

Franklin Barnwell '55 of Minneapolis, Minn., is a professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior at the University of Minnesota. He has been the Morse-Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor of Ecology since 1989. Dr. Barnwell received both his BS and PhD degrees from Northwestern University and later headed Minnesota's ecology department for eight years. In 1998, he was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Linnean Society of London, the world's oldest biological society.

Dwayne Bowman '80 of Davidson, N.C., graduated magna cum laude from Furman University and earned a masters in computer science from Georgia Tech. After working as a software developer for several companies, he was named Director of Technology at Corbis, a company founded by Bill Gates in the '90s. Following several years as Director of Technology for Amazon.com, he relocated to Lake Norman, N.C., in 2002 and founded Woodlawn School, an independent private school just north of Davidson College. In its fourth year, the school has 100 students from the third to ninth grades.

Dr. Winston Caine '55 of Chattanooga has practiced internal medicine and hematology since 1969. He graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt, attended Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at Vanderbilt with a fellowship in hematology. He also served in the U.S. Air Force as Chief of Medical Services at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Caine is currently Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. He has twice received the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Chattanooga unit of UTCM and has won several other wares for his leadership in teaching.

Dr. Stephen Clift '70 of Tacoma, Wash., is a plastic surgeon with the Avalon Clinic. He earned his M.D. from Emory University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residencies at St. Louis University. Dr. Clift joined the U.S. Army in 1984, where he served as a major and Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma. Last year, Dr. Clift was sent to Iraq with the Washington Army Guard in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and assigned to a clinic in Balad, Iraq. There he provided primary care for American soldiers and then worked in the base hospital as part of the orthopedic surgery team.

Theodore Hutcheson Jr. '85 of Atlanta is Director of Marketing for AirTran Airways, where he oversees sales, marketing, advertising, and corporate and community relations and communications. Mr. Hutcheson received his B.A. from King College, completed international marketing studies at Oxford University and the International Business Institute in Europe, and received an M.B.A. from Wake Forest University. He is the recipient of several professional awards including two Rising Star awards from Travel Agent Magazine.

Dr. Jack McCallie '75 of Chattanooga received a B.S. from the University of Virginia and an M.D. from Vanderbilt. Upon completion of his internal medicine residency at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, he joined his father David '40 in private practice in Chattanooga. This fall, Dr. McCallie begins his 18th year as "school physician" for McCallie School, where he supports the nursing staff at the infirmary and provides open-door access to primary care for the boarding student population and its health needs.

Scott McGinness Jr. '65 of Chattanooga is an attorney with Miller and Martin. He has represented companies in the purchase and sale of stock and assets, with transaction sizes in excess of $200 million. He heads up the firm's Investment Management Practice Group, which represents investment managers and entities that have in excess of $2 billion under management. Mr. McGinness received an A.B. degree from Dartmouth College and his J.D. from the University of Tennessee College of Law. He served in the U.S. Navy, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. He has also served as president of the McCallie School Alumni Council, mayor of the Town of Lookout Mountain, and is presently a member of the Board of Trustees for Girls Preparatory School.

William Robertson III '55 of Greenville, S.C., is a retired attorney. He has served as past-president of both the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association and the Chapter Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He graduated from Washington and Lee University and received his J.D. from the University of South Carolina. Mr. Robertson is now an "adventurer" who tours throughout the world by motorcycle and boat. He is a masters swimmer who in 1996 was ranked first in the world in the 200-meter freestyle competition in Sheffield, England. He is a nationally-ranked triathlon competitor. In addition, he has worked as a volunteer reader in elementary schools, a volunteer swim coach at Furman University, and a girls tennis coach for Greenville High School.

Maj. Sinclair Smith '90 of Monterey, Calif., attended the United States Naval Academy and reported to the Basic School for Marine Officers upon graduation. He was assigned as a field artillery officer and ordered to Ft. Sill, Okla., for formal schooling. In 1999, Maj. Smith was in charge of enlistment and officer programs for the West Coast and Pacific regions. He participated in operations in Korea before taking command of a battery for an extended deployment to Japan. He then commanded a unit that was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II. Maj. Smith is currently assigned to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey. His personal decorations include the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation.
