Police Blotter: Woman With Partial Fingers Lifts Collector Plates

  • Wednesday, June 8, 2005

A Brainerd Road merchant said a woman with only partial fingers on both hands lifted four collector plates from his store at 3228 Brainerd Road.

Richard Wehunt of the Iris Touch said he heard something in the back room of the store. He said he saw the white female standing with her back to him near the collector plates.

He said he asked her if he could help her, and she only grunted. He said he walked away for a few seconds, then she went out the door. He then saw that a group of plates were missing.

Mr. Wehunt said he jumped into his vehicle and caught up with the woman, who was driving a gray 2002 Camaro convertible, in front of Belvoir Pharmacy.

He said he told her, "Give me back my plates." She asked if he was going to call police. He said no, if she would give them back.

Mr. Wehunt said she handed him three plates. He said he learned later that she kept a fourth plate that was worth $20.

Officers found a broken glass at the front of a business at 3209 Broad St. The owner said three bottles of Crown Royal liquor were missing.

A Dollar Store employee said he made a citizen's arrest on a shoplifter with the help of two citizens.

Jason Howard, of the store at 2700 Broad St., said he saw Cephas Wyatt exit the store with items under his shirt. He said he stopped him outside the store and asked him to return the items.

He said Wyatt pulled deodrant from under his shirt along with a pair of tennis shoes. The clerk said when he bent over to pick up the items, Wyatt pushed him to the ground. He said Wyatt continued to resist until the two citizens came to his aid.

Wyatt was taken to the County Jail on charges of theft over $500 and simple assault.

Lavarien Grundy said thieves entered a duplex he is remodeling at 3015 New York Ave. They took $8,000 worth of copper wiring and copper plumbing.

The doors were left unlocked, and there was no forced entry.

Stuart Chase said someone kicked in the rear patio door at his home on Memphis Avenue. They took a camera from the den and several pieces of jewelry from a jewelry box in the bedroom.

Mrs. Kristin Dotson said her father became upset with her during an argument. She said he pushed her against a wall, pushed her out of the house and threw her down a set of concrete steps.

Police said the father, Dale Case, "admitted to police that everything his daughter said was true." He was taken to jail from the residence on Cloverdale Circle.
