Welcome, Publix

  • Tuesday, October 10, 2006

It is great news to hear that Chattanooga is soon to get a grocery store the caliber of Publix.

I grew up in Florida and worked at Publix as a teenager, and I can say that the Publix supermarket chain is a first-class operation and will be a welcome addition in Hixson.

If you haven't yet experienced the level of service, produce, and merchandise that Publix has to offer, you are in for a treat. Chattanooga has hit the lottery for grocery shopping and I invite everyone to soon find out why "shopping is a pleasure" at Publix.

The only drawback is that we have to wait till 2008.

Wow! Pinch me and make sure I am not dreaming. Well, we not longer have to wonder if BI-LO will be sold or close or move out or what. Maybe Publix will make BI-LO become a real supermarket and start providing service for a change. Maybe the days of getting my bread under the canned goods or the box of rat poison in with the dry cereal are over.

One thing I know for sure, Publix will be the number one supermarket in the Chattanooga market from the day it opens. It is about time that we get a first-class operation in Chattanooga the likes we have never seen.

I cannot wait for the Publix to open here in Chattanooga. It certainly will be a pleasure.

Three cheers for Publix. At last we will have a decent store in which to shop.

Now if we could only get a bakery to move back into Chattanooga.I haven't had a fresh loaf of bread at home since Earth Grains closed up shop here.

The Atlanta plan to get the bread on the shelf quicker and fresher didn't work. I think the bread we now get is taken off the shelf in Atlanta when the sell by date expires.

It’s about time. Hopefully Publix will be the chain to realize that there are people who live downtown who not only like to eat, but prefer to shop in clean stores with good, healthy selections.

Apparently Bi-Lo thinks that we only want to drink 40s and eat pig parts purchased from a dirty store while they remodel stores in East Brainerd that don’t need remodeling. The lack of grocery stores anywhere near the downtown area is shocking, much less anything of quality.

So, welcome, Publix. But please come downtown – or somewhere close to it. We like to eat food from clean stores too. We will more than support you if you come.

Hallelujah! Publix is on the way! It can't come soon enough.

I lived in Florida for eight years where I discovered the wonder that is Publix. Then I moved, but still enjoyed Publix for two more years in Birmingham. But, coming here two years ago and discovering that my "best" option was BI-LO, was quite a culture shock.

Shopping at BI-LO is almost depressing. They are understaffed and terrible baggers. Produce that was decent when I purchased it arrives at my home bruised and cut open due to the heavy cans placed on top.

But shopping at Publix truly is a pleasure. Clean, sharp stores, so many choices, awesome customer service, and some of the best deli sandwiches you'll ever eat. Each time we visit Birmingham, we make a stop at Publix to get some favorite items to bring back to Chattanooga. I can't wait to get these favorites any time I want.

After living and vacationing in areas already served by Publix, I am very excited to see that they are finally entering the Chattanooga market. I'll gladly drive past other supermarkets to shop at Publix.

This is a much-needed addition to a local grocery market that had grown stale and complacent.

No pun intended, but Chattanooga has been starving for a first-class
supermarket. When Publix opens, I'll actually drive past two Food Lions,
two Bi-Los, and two Wal-Marts to reach the parking lot.

I'll claw my way there if I have to.
