  • Saturday, November 4, 2006

Bryan College volleyball closed its regular season at home with a sweep of visiting Montreat and Brevard Colleges.

The Lions’ lone Senior Abby Humphrey was honored in the first game against Montreat, and she led the Lions to a quick 3-0 victory (30-22, 30-17, 30-24). Humphrey added another double-double in the winning effort with 13 kills (.300 pct) and 11 digs.

Robin Renfroe continues to shine in the middle for the Lions, tallying a game-high 14 kills (.500 pct) and 4 total blocks. Setter Hannah Suits controlled the serve, tallying 15 service points and 2 aces along with her 17 assists. Setter Jenny Loveday had a double-double as well with 26 assists and 12 digs.

The win over Montreat secures the best finish for the Lions ever in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, as they reclaim the #2 spot to close out conference play.

The Lions had a little tougher battle in the second match against Brevard, but Renfroe’s team record-breaking block performance led the Lions to a second sweep (30-25, 30-20, 30-26). Renfroe tallied 3 solo blocks and 10 assisted blocks in the match, and added 10 kills in the win. Hannah Suits again led the Lions from the service line with 19 service points and 2 more aces. Libero Kathryn Rawley gave a strong performance in both games, with 42 total digs on the day.

With the victory, the Lions achieve a 25-win season, its first since the mid-1980’s when the program advanced to the NCCAA nationals with a 30-10 record. The Lions, now 25-10 overall (14-4 conference), await bracketing for the AAC tournament, to be hosted at King College Nov. 10-11.
