Jewel Stafford, 91, died Monday, June 26, 2006, in a local health care facility.

She was a lifelong resident of North Georgia and was of the Methodist faith. Mrs. Stafford was a founder of the Red Cross Gray Ladies Volunteer program at Tri-County Hospital, now Hutcheson Medical Center, and served for over 30 years.

She had been very active and had served in numerous offices in many civic clubs including the Rossville Exchange Club and the Rossville Business and Professional Women’s Club, where she served as chairman for the Little Miss Rossville Padgett and the Walker County Chamber of Commerce.

Mrs. Stafford was very instrumental in obtaining historical status for the Rossville Post Office building and also in the building of the existing Rossville Public Library. She had served on the election commission for elections in Walker County and the state of Georgia and was author of the "History of Walker County."

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter W. Stafford; one brother; and two sisters.

She is survived by her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Sheriff Steve Wilson officiating.
