Southern's Archaeological Museum To Unveil Goddess Asherah

  • Monday, February 11, 2008

Southern Adventist University’s Lynn H. Wood Archaeological Museum will host an open house on Feb. 21 from 5-6:45 p.m.

During this time a figurine of the fertility goddess, Asherah will be unveiled for public display. Following this, Michael Hasel, professor and museum curator, will speak on “Religion and Gods in Ancient Israel,” in Lynn Wood Hall chapel at 7 p.m.

“Asherah is mentioned over 40 times in the Bible,” said Mr. Hasel, “and was even placed in the temple by King Manassah (1 Kings 21). The pillared figurine provides visitors with an actual visual of one of the ancient idols in Canaanite religion.”

The presentation will also highlight the latest archaeological discoveries regarding ancient Israel’s popular religion and worship practices.

The open house is free, and all are welcomed to come.

The museum is in Hackman Hall, 4881 Promenade.
