A McMinn County man is facing federal charges after authorities found 70 weapons and a stockpile of ammunition in his residence while investigating a shooting incident.
Roy L. Moses Jr. is charged in Federal Court in Chattanooga with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Authorities said on Sept. 28, McMinn County Sheriff's Deputy Andy Moser responded on an alleged attempted theft and aggravated assault at the Moses residence.
Moses said he heard his dog barking and found a red-headed man carrying a pipe in his yard at 117 County Road 208 in Athens. He said the man tried to hit him with the pipe. Moses said he ran inside and got a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, then ran back out and shot at the man several times. Moses said he also tried to follow the man in his car.
On Monday, officers went back to the Moses residence and asked to retrieve the weapon he said he used in the shooting incident. That same day, officers executed a search warrant at the residence and found the cache of weapons.
Moses' record includes grand larceny in McMinn County in 1989 and a 1996 federal felony conviction for theft of TVA property.
