  • Monday, November 30, 2009

A man trying to steal copper wire from an EPB substation in Hixson early Sunday morning was electrocuted. Police have positively identified him as 33-year-old Clyde E. Mosier Jr.

He was identified through his fingerprints and family identification.

There is still no information on his accomplice.

The burglar had no ID on him and Chattanooga Police Major Crime investigators had been asking the public's help in identifying him.

The incident happened shortly after midnight at the substation at 4500 Eldridge Road.

At approximately 12:40 a.m., Chattanooga Police were called to the substation on a theft in progress call. Upon the officer's arrival, he found one of the suspects still inside the substation. The man had apparently been electrocuted.

The man was transported to Erlanger Hospital by EMS. He died from his injuries around 7:40 a.m.

According to the responding officer, the man and another suspect cut the surrounding fence to make entry and then climbed a second fence to gain entry to the substation.

Once inside, the two burglars began pulling up the grounding copper wire from the substation. One of the men then climbed on top of the transformer and was cutting the grounds when he came in contact with a hot wire.

The other suspect with him left the scene before police arrived.
