Dan Fisher, M.D., surgical director of Erlanger's Kidney Transplant Center, performing the first kidney transplant in 1989.
Erlanger’s Kidney Transplant Center will celebrated its twentieth anniversary on Wednesday, Sept. 29, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the Erlanger Medical Mall. Area kidney donors and recipients, as well as their families, are invited to attend this milestone event.
Chattanooga’s first kidney transplant was performed at Erlanger on Sept. 26, 1989, when a mother donated a kidney to her daughter. Since then, Erlanger has performed over 500 kidney transplants providing patients with a full continuum of care, including dialysis, transplants, and post-operative care.
In 2005, Erlanger began performing hand assisted laparoscopic living donor nephrectomies which allows for a quicker recovery time and less post operative pain for kidney donors. Erlanger is also a statewide leader in organ procurement, helping match patients with kidneys quickly and efficiently.
A special recognition ceremony, quest speakers, and reception will take place during the celebration.
