Mocs Take National Ranking To #25 Furman

  • Friday, October 22, 2010

Sporting a national ranking for the first time in almost 13 years, the UTC football team heads to No. 25 Furman (4-2, 2-1 SoCon) this week. The Mocs (4-2, 3-1 SoCon) check in at No. 24 in the Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Football Top-25. It is their first national ranking since Nov. 3, 1997, when they were No. 23 in the country.

UTC sits alone in third place in the Southern Conference standings with a 3-1 record, 4-2 overall. Furman is a half-game behind with a 2-1 mark in league play and also 4-2 overall. The Mocs have won four straight - three in a row in SoCon play - for the first time since 1997.

Getting to five in a row will be a tall task considering Chattanooga is also trying to snap a 15-game losing streak to the Paladins. UTC's last win in the rivalry was a 34-20 victory at Paladin Stadium on Nov. 19, 1994. Furman leads the series 26-13 that dates back to 1928 and the Mocs have only one three times in Paladin Stadium that was opened in 1981.

It is Homecoming at Furman, so look for a big crowd at the game. The Paladins are 3-0 on their home field this season. This is the fourth ranked team the Mocs have faced this season. UTC is 1-2 in games against ranked teams in 2010, including last week's 35-27 win over No. 18 Georgia Southern and losses to No. 3 Appalachian State (42-41) and No. 5 Jacksonville State (21-17) in the first two games of the year.

ON THE AIR
Jim Reynolds, who is in his 31st season as the 'Voice of the Mocs', will have the call on the Mocs Sports Network. Fans can tune into the flagship station, ESPN Radio 105.1 FM in Chattanooga, or listen online on Chattanooga All Access on GoMocs.com. Todd Agne will provide the color commentary with Will Poindexter on the sidelines. Pregame coverage starts at 1 p.m.

PREVIEWING CHATTANOOGA
The 24th-ranked Mocs are trying to win their fifth consecutive game, and their fourth SoCon game in a row, for the first time since head coach Russ Huesman was a junior on the 1980 squad. They are also trying to break one of the longest losing streaks to one team in the country in their current 15-game skid to Furman. Most of the Mocs were not in preschool when UTC last beat the Paladins (34-20) in the season finale on Nov. 19, 1994.

Junior LB Ryan Consiglio (Franklin, Tenn.), leads the team and is second in the SoCon with 11.2 tackles per game. Fellow junior Chris Donald (Huntingdon, Tenn.) is tied for No. 13 in the nation with 5.5 sacks per game. Freshman defensive back Kadeem Wise (Lawrenceville, Ga.) is tied for second in the country with five interceptions. His fifth pick at The Citadel broke the UTC freshman record previously held by head coach Russ Huesman (1978). Together they lead a defense that is ranked No. 3 in the league, allowing 336.5 yards of total offense per game.

Junior QB B.J. Coleman (Chattanooga, Tenn.) leads the offensive attack, completing 61% (102-168) of his pass attempts. He is second in the SoCon with 239.8 yards in the air per game. He also has 14 touchdown passes to go against three interceptions and does not have a pick in the last two games. He is currently seventh in the nation with a 156.59 passing rating.

Coleman's favorite target is his former high school teammate Joel Bradford (Chattanooga, Tenn.). The junior receiver is second in the SoCon and No. 7 in the country with 100.2 receiving yards per game. His 6.7 catches per game are second in the league and tied for 10th nationally.

The ground game is led by a true freshman and a fifth-year senior in Keon Williams (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Erroll Wynn (Jonesboro, Ga.). After sitting out 2009 as a redshirt, Wynn is currently third in the SoCon with 85.0 rushing yards per game. Williams became the first UTC freshman since Wynn in 2006 to top 100 rushing yards in a game, totaling 101 at The Citadel on Oct. 9. He has led the team in rushing each of the last two games and is putting up 62.0 yards per game on the ground.

Mocs head coach Russ Huesman, the 2009 SoCon Coach of the Year, is in his second season at UTC. He led Chattanooga to its first winning season since 2005 with last year's 6-5 mark. He has an overall record of 10-7 and is 7-5 in league games.

PREVIEWING FURMAN
The Paladins bring a No. 25 national ranking to the game, including the SoCon's top-ranked passing defense. Furman is allowing just 101.2 yards per game in the air this season, a number that also ranks No. 2 in the nation. Conversely, they are last in the league in rushing defense, allowing 243.2 yards per game on the ground. That ranks 113th out of 117 FCS programs. Average those numbers out and the Paladins are No. 5 in the SoCon in total defense, allowing 344 yards per game.

Senior QB Cody Worley leads the offense, averaging 160.8 passing yards per game. Senior WR Adam Mims is third in the league in reception (6.0) and receiving yards per game (84.7).

The defense is led by current SoCon Player of the Week junior CB Ryan Steed. Steed racked up 10 tackles and an interception, which he returned 57 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter to give Furman an early 7-0 lead in last week's win over Samford. The interception return for a score was the second of his career and third by a Paladin this year. It also marked Steed's ninth pick off of his career. His strong play keyed a Furman defense that recorded a second half shutout en route to the win.

Freshman PK Ryan Early is the current SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week. He went 3-for-3 on PATs and converted both of his field goal opportunities, including a career-best 52-yard effort in the first quarter and a 31-yard kick in the second half against Samford. The 52-yarder matched the second longest kick in Furman history. The true freshman also averaged 66.0 yards on six kickoffs, recording two touchbacks. He is now 7-for-8 on field goals this season and is Furman's leading scorer with 45 points.

QUICK NOTES TO KNOW ABOUT THE FURMAN GAME

The Mocs are looking for their fifth consecutive win. They have not won five in a row since head coach Russ Huesman was a junior defensive back in 1980.
UTC is also looking for its fourth consecutive SoCon win...that has also not happened since 1980.
The Mocs have lost 15 consecutive games to Furman. UTC's last win in the series was a 34-20 victory on Nov. 19, 1994.
Chattanooga has never beaten Furman and Georgia Southern in the same season.
Junior WR Joel Bradford is second the SoCon and is No. 7 in the nation with 100.2 receiving yards per game. He broke the Mocs' school record with 254 receiving yards against EKU and is tied for 10th in the country with 6.7 receptions per game.
Bradford is also a dangerous punt returner, averaging 16.8 yards per return. That would lead the SoCon and rank No. 10 in the nation if he had enough returns to qualify for rankings.
The Mocs are putting up 256 yards in the air on average this season, ranking third in the SoCon and No. 21 in the nation. That will be put to the test as Furman owns the No. 2 ranked passing defense in the nation, allowing just 101 yards in the air per game.
Senior RB Erroll Wynn has 527 career carries, the sixth Moc to top the 500-rushes mark in a career. He needs 14 more to pass Gwain Durden (1977-80) for 4th place all-time at UTC. He is currently 12th among active players in the NCAA for career carries.
Wynn is 8th all-time at UTC with 2,229 career rushing yards...needs 30 yards to pass Carey Henley (1958-61) for seventh and 56 yards to pass Robert Smith (1967-70) for sixth all-time.
Senior OL T.J. Hurless (Suwanee, Ga.) has started the last 30 games of his career, the longest such streak on the team...this will be senior RT Chris Harr's 30th consecutive start.
Junior QB B.J. Coleman has thrown for 3,787 yards in his 16-game UTC career. He needs 46 more through the air to pass Antonio Miller (2004-07) for seventh all-time at UTC.
Coleman is second in the SoCon and No. 12 in the nation with 239 passing yards per game. He is also No. 7 in the nation with a 156.59 passer rating.
The last time UTC came into a game ranked, they fell to The Citadel 7-3 at home on Nov. 8, 1997.
The last time UTC was involved in a game where both teams were ranked, the No. 23 Mocs fell to 18th-ranked Appalachian State on Nov. 1, 1997, in Boone, N.C.
UTC has lost four-straight games when ranked...the last win as a ranked team came on Sept. 5, 1992 when the 17th-ranked Mocs defeated Boise State on the road 35-20.
The Mocs have a 2-10 record all-time when ranked in the top-25 in the nation.
"RESTORE THE GLORY"
For the past two years, the slogan for the Mocs football program has been, "Restore the Glory." Head Coach Russ Huesman was hired in December 2008 to bring back the championship tradition that he helped to build as a defensive back for the Mocs from 1978-81. During his time at UTC, the Mocs won two Southern Conference championships under legendary head coach Joe Morrison. In fact, UTC won the SoCon in four of its first eight years in the league (1977, 1978, 1979 and 1984). Just 17 games into his tenure, Coach Huesman has taken a team that went 1-11 in the year prior to his arrival and rebuilt them into a nationally ranked team. UTC is No. 24 in the nation this week, its first national ranking since 1997. There is still a long way to go to "Restore the Glory," but Coach Huesman certainly has the Mocs moving in the right direction.

SO NOW THEY ARE A SECOND HALF TEAM
The Mocs started out the year owning the first half, outscoring their first four opponents 80-20 in the opening two periods. However, they have been a stronger second-half team in each of their last two games. Against the Citadel, UTC allowed 10 points and 192 yards rushing the in first half, only to shutout the Bulldogs and give up just 46 yards on the ground in the second half. Against Georgia Southern, they were behind 20-14 at the break for the first time this season. After allowing 198 yards on the ground in the first half, the Mocs buckled down and only gave up 53 in the second half of the 35-27 win.

B.J. COLEMAN IS LIVING UP TO THE HYPE
Junior QB B.J. Coleman created quite a stir in the Scenic City when he announced his decision to transfer from Tennessee to Chattanooga in the summer of 2009. The former high school standout at McCallie in Chattanooga was fourth in the SoCon in total offense (210.8/game) and third in passing yards (213.5/game) last season.

His numbers were even more impressive when you consider he had thrown a total of eight competitive passes the previous two seasons. His teammates have shown confidence in him by naming him one of three team captains and the league's coaches have pegged him a preseason Second Team All-SoCon selection in 2010. He continues to impress in 2010 with:

23-37 passing for 340 yards against Appalachian State.
- 5 TDs - three passing and two running - vs. ASU.
24-32 for a career-high 375 yards passing against Eastern Kentucky.
- 4 TDs tied a career-high.
- 3rd career 300-yard game...joins Chris Sanders (1999-00) as the only Mocs with 3+ 300-yard games.
102-168 (60.7%) for 1,439 yards, 14 TDs and three INTs on the year.
- Second in the SoCon and No. 7 in the nation with a 156.59 passing rating.
- Second in the SoCon and is 12th in the NCAA, averaging 239.8 passing yards per game.
3,787 passing yards in his career.
- Needs 46 more yards to pass Antonio Miller (2004-07) for 7th on the Mocs' all-time list.
11 200-yard passing games is T3rd on the Mocs' career list.
31 career TDs is No. 5 on the Mocs' list.
WYNN RESURRECTING HIS CAREER
Senior RB Erroll Wynn saw his first action in nearly two years when he had 13 carries for 98 yards, all in the second half, at Jacksonville State. He sat out the 2009 season as a redshirt and was held out of the ASU game. He continues to impress with 425 yards on 67 carries this season. He is currently third in the SoCon with 85.0 rushing yards per game. Wynn's 527 career carries is 5th all time at UTC and ranks 12th among all active players in the FCS. He is now No. 8 on the Mocs' career list with 2,229 rushing yards.

SUTHERLAND SHOWING HIS VERSATILITY
Sophomore WR Brian Sutherland (Smyrna, Ga.) is among the SoCon leaders in all-purpose yards this season. Sutherland is second in the league with 139.2 yards per game. His total of 835 all purpose yards is made up of 148 rushing, 314 receiving and 373 on kick-off returns.

BRADFORD HAVING A BREAKOUT SEASON
Junior WR Joel Bradford's move back to receiver from defensive back has paid huge dividends so far this season. His school-record 254 yards receiving against Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 18 is the most in a game in the FCS this season. Bradford is currently second on the team, 2nd in the SoCon and tied for 10th in the nation with 6.7 catches per game. He also is second in the SoCon and is No. 7 in the nation with 100.2 receiving yds/game. Bradford is also a dangerous punt returner. His 16.8 yds/punt return average would be No. 10 in the nation if he had enough returns to qualify for the rankings.

WILLIAMS NAMED SOCON FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
UTC's Keon Williams was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week after a 28-10 win at The Citadel on Oct 9. The running back from Chattanooga, rushed for 101 yards on 19 carries in his first career start. He averaged 5.3 yards per carry and scored two touchdowns in the win over the Bulldogs. He is the first UTC freshman to reach 100-yards rushing since Errol Wynn had 131 against Jacksonville State in 2006 and just the second 100-yard rusher this year.

WISE BREAKS HUESMAN'S FRESHMAN RECORD
Freshman DB Kadeem Wise (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week after picking off two passes at Western Carolina on Sept. 25. Add in another at The Citadel and he now has five interceptions for the season, breaking UTC's freshman record set in 1978 by current head coach Russ Huesman. Wise was the first Moc with multiple INTs in a game since Buster Skrine had two against Western Kentucky in 2007. Wise is also tied for No. 2 in the nation with five INTs on the year.

DONALD AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS IN SACKS
Junior DE Chris Donald (Huntingdon, Tenn.) did not come with the same hype as fellow junior B.J. Coleman did when he followed Coleman from Tennessee to Chattanooga. Despite being the first 5-star prep player to come to UTC, Donald started slow in the spring. He moved from linebacker to defensive line and is heating up. He had a sack and forced a fumble against Appalachian State and then unloaded for 12 tackles at Jacksonville State. He added another 2.5 sacks against EKU. His 5.5 sacks on the year are tied for No. 13 in the nation.

VERES KICKING AGAIN THIS WEEK
Chattanooga was expecting to replace senior All-American PK Craig Camay with true freshman Nick Pollard (Nashville, Tenn.). However, Pollard has been out with an injury, forcing sophomore WR Jeff Veres (Thompson's Station, Tenn.) to return to his old position. Veres is 20-21 on PATs this season. He made his first 11 of the year before missing the last one at WCU. Junior Mike Hammons was handling all of the kicking duties, but returned to just punting where he is a preseason 2nd Team All-SoCon selection.

NOTES FROM THE GEORGIA SOUTHERN GAME

The Mocs scored a 35-27 win over No. 18 Georgia Southern tonight...it was the fourth win over the Eagles in the 24-game history of the series and the third win over the Eagles in the last five meetings.
UTC improves to 4-2 on the year, posting four wins in its first six games for the second year in a row.
Sitting at 4-2 - 3-1 in SoCon action - the Mocs are knocking on the door of their first national ranking since 1997. UTC was last ranked on Nov. 3, 1997, when they checked in at No. 23 in the Sports Network Top-25.
Chattanooga is now on a four-game winning streak for the first time since the 1997 season. That is also the last time UTC won three-straight Southern Conference games.
UTC records wins over Western Carolina, The Citadel and Georgia Southern in the same season for the first time in school history.
Tonight's attendance of 17,414 is the second largest crowd to see a Mocs game in Finley Stadium history. The largest is the first game at the facility - 22,642 against Tennessee State on Oct. 18, 1997 - 28-7 Mocs win. The Mocs are now averaging 14,397 fans per game in 2010 and 11,963 in eight games of the Russ Huesman era. ASU game on Sept. 4, 2010 is now the third largest crowd at 15,235.
Georgia Southern's Tobi Akinniranye scored on a 60-yard TD run in the second quarter...the longest rush UTC has allowed this season.
UTC had its longest drive (in terms of plays) of the season in the third quarter. Junior QB B.J. Coleman scored on an 11-yard run in the third quarter, capping off a 17-play, 80-yard excursion.
The Mocs also had the longest drive, in terms of yards, when Coleman hit sophomore Brian Sutherland for a 43-yard strike in the fourth quarter, capping a seven-play, 94-yard drive. That put the Mocs up 35-20.
Mocs improve to 29-16-1 on Homecoming all-time, including two-straight over ranked teams (38-9 over No. 17 Wofford on Sept. 26, 2009).
Georgia Southern put up 255 rushing yards, the most the Mocs have allowed this season. However, GSU only gained 57 yards on the ground in the second half.
This is the Mocs' first win over a ranked team since defeating No. 17 Wofford on Homecoming last year 38-9.
UTC trailed 17-7 in the second quarter, its largest deficit of the season. The Mocs trailed at halftime - 20-14 - for the first time in 2010.
Sophomore RB Chris Awuah - First TD reception of the season...2nd of his career...46-yard TD reception.
Junior QB B.J. Coleman - 11-21 passing for 159 yards and two TDs...Ran for a third score...his fourth rushing TD of the season...has 14 TDs against three INTs on the season...second straight game without throwing a pick.
Junior LB Ryan Consiglio - Team-high 10 tackles...forced a fumble.
Junior DL Chris Donald - Seven tackles, one sack and a forced fumble...leads the team with 5.5 sacks on the year...third forced fumble on the season.
Sophomore RB J.J. Jackson - Three carries for 16 yards and one TD...first career score.
Junior DB Chris Lewis-Harris - Recovered his second fumble of the season.
Sophomore WR Brian Sutherland - Five catches for 80 yards and one TD...career-high for catches...first career TD.
Junior DB Jordan Tippit - Picked off his second pass of the season to seal the win...his eighth career INT...tied for 8th all-time at UTC.
Freshman RB Keon Williams - Team-high 90 yards rushing on 16 carries...led the team in rushing for the second straight game...two straight games without a negative run.
BRADFORD GRABS FIRST CAREER POW HONORS...ALSO TAKES HOME NATIONAL RECOGNITION
Junior Joel Bradford reaped the weekly benefits of his record-breaking performance against Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 18. He was the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week after setting a new UTC single-game mark with 254 receiving yards in the Mocs' 42-24 win over the Colonels. Bradford recorded his first career 100-yard game before the end of the first quarter, thanks in large part to an 80-yard touchdown connection with junior QB B.J. Coleman. That strike was the longest by a Moc since 1999 and just the eighth passing play of 80+ yards in school history. Bradford's 254 receiving yards broke Chattanooga's previous high of 247 set by Alonzo Nix in a 59-56 win against Appalachian State on Oct. 30, 2004. It is the most receiving yards in a game by anyone in the Football Championship Subdivision this season and the fifth most receiving yards in a game in SoCon history. Bradford was also named the SoCon X-Factor of the Week by SouthernPigskin.com and one of four National Receivers of the Week by CollegeFootballPerformance.com. Bradford shared the SoCon weekly honor with Furman senior Adam Mims.

CONSIGLIO EARNS SECOND CAREER POW HONOR
Junior LB Ryan Consiglio grabbed his second career SoCon Player of the Week honor after a strong performance at Jacksonville State on Sept. 11. Consiglio established a new career high with a game-high 14 tackles against the fifth-ranked Gamecocks. He also added his second career interception and recorded 1.5 tackles for loss.

HAMMONS GRABS LEAGUE AND NATIONAL WEEKLY HONORS
Junior P Mike Hammons was named the SoCon Special Team Player of the Week and the College Football Performance Awards National Punter of the Week for his play at No. 5 Jacksonville State. Hammons averaged 47.0 yards per punt for the Mocs in their second-straight game against a top-5 opponent. He totaled 141 yards on three kicks and placed two inside the 5-yard line to pin Jacksonville State deep in its own end. He also booted a 50-yard punt, the ninth of his career.

MOCS BREAK SEASON TICKET SALES RECORD AGAIN IN 2010
The Chattanooga Mocs broke the all-time season ticket mark at Finley Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 1. UTC topped the 2,527 sold in 2009 and finished with 2,676 sold for the year. This is the fourth year UTC has topped the 2000-sold mark, including 2,003 in 1998 and 2,300 in 1997.

SIX MOCS TABBED PRESEASON ALL-SOCON
Senior offensive tackle Chris Harr (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and cornerback Buster Skrine (Woodstock, Ga.) highlight the six Mocs all-conference selections. They are first team picks as the six UTC players tie for third most in the league with Elon, Furman and Wofford. App State leads the way with 13 followed by Elon with seven. Junior quarterback B.J. Coleman heads four second teamers for the Mocs, but he is the only one on offense. Sophomore defensive end Josh Williams (Griffin, Ga.) and junior linebacker Ryan Consiglio are the defensive selections. Junior punter Mike Hammons being tabbed on the second team gives the Mocs coverage in all three phases of the game on preseason squads.

CEREBRAL BUNCH
The offensive line has a lot of academic honors among its ranks. Sophomores Adam Miller, Dustin Tate and Austin Wilson were all on the 2009 Academic All-SoCon team. Freshmen Irvin Hernandez and Steven Nease, sophomore Will Hewitt, senior T.J. Hurless and Miller made the Dean's List and were joined by senior Chris Harr, Tate and Wilson on the Athletics Director's Honor Roll. Nease owns the highest g.p.a. on the team with a perfect 4.0.

TOP-10 CROWDS AT FINLEY STADIUM
All three of the Mocs' 2010 home crowds rank in the top-10 in Finley Stadium history and two are in the top-3 in school history. This is the first time UTC has had three 10,000+ crowds in the same year since moving to Finley Stadium in 1997. The second largest crowd for a Mocs game - 17,414 - attended Chattanooga's 35-27 win over No. 18 Georgia Southern on Oct. 9. The Mocs saw 15,235 fans spin the turnstiles at the WHITEOUT game against Appalachian State on Sept. 4. Another 10,543 came to the EKU game, ranking No. 8 on the list. UTC's record crowd is 22,642 set against Tennessee State in the first game at Finley Stadium on Oct. 18, 1997. The largest crowd to watch a football game at Finley is 23,010 when Appalachian State defeated Delaware 49-21 in the FCS National Championship game on Dec. 14, 2007. Seven of the top-15 crowds in Finley Stadium history have been in the last two years. UTC has reached the 10,000 mark 10 times at Finley Stadium and five of those crowds have also come in the last two years.

Below are the top-15 attended Moc games at Finley Stadium:

No. Attendance Opponent W/L Score Date
1. 22,642 Tennessee State W 28-7 Oct. 18, 1997

UTC IS IN THE TOP-20 IN ATTENDANCE
With all three home crowds topping the 10,000 mark in 2010, the Mocs are in the top-20 in the nation in average home attendance. UTC is getting 14,397 fans on average to Finley Stadium for its home games, ranking No. 18 in the FCS. The Mocs total attendance of 43,192 through three games is 21st in the country. The school record for average attendance in a season is 11,576 when UTC played its last four home games in the brand new Finley Stadium in 1997. The Mocs averaged 10,503 in 2009, the highest average for a full season at UTC.

ATTENDANCE IN THE HUESMAN ERA
UTC has seen a dramatic growth in attendance at home football games since the hiring of Russ Huesman in December 2008. Five of the Mocs top-10 crowds have come in the eight home games of the Huesman era. Chattanooga is averaging 13,672 fans per game over the last two seasons. Prior to Huesman's arrival, UTC averaged 5,767 fans per game in the 2008 season.

IT'S ALL IN THE NAME
On first reference, it is acceptable to refer to us as the "University of Tennessee at Chattanooga". After that, we prefer to be called "Chattanooga" or "UTC". Our nickname is "Mocs".

MOCS PICKED 4TH BY THE SOCON MEDIA AND 5TH BY THE LEAGUE'S COACHES IN THE PRESEASON
The Mocs are picked to finish fourth by the media and fifth by the leagues other eight coaches - a coach is not allowed to vote for his own team. Appalachian State is the overwhelming favorite in both sets of ballots. The Mountaineers received seven of a possible eight first-place votes on the coaches' side while garnering 22 of 30 on the media side. Elon is the second-place selection with the remaining two coaches' votes and six of the eight left over media top picks. Furman is third on both sides but that's where the polls begin to differ in opinion. On the media side Chattanooga is fourth followed by Wofford, Samford (one first on the media side), Georgia Southern, Western Carolina and The Citadel. The coaches target Samford fourth with UTC, Wofford, Georgia Southern, The Citadel and Western Carolina rounding out the field.

TOUGHER SCHEDULE IN 2010
As the Mocs are improving, so is their slate of non-conference opponents. Chattanooga posted wins over Division II Glenville State and a winless FCS team in Presbyterian in 2009. They traded those two games with No. 5 Jacksonville State and Eastern Kentucky, picked to finish 3rd in the OVC in 2010.

ROSTER, DEPTH CHART AND BREAKDOWNS
A complete roster is located on pages 10-11 of the .pdf version of the game notes. There is a roster breakdown on page 12 and a list of the starters and letter winners returning and lost on page 13. A two-deep chart can be found on pages 14-15.

SEASON NO. 103
The Chattanooga Mocs are in their 103rd season of UTC football. The University of Chattanooga was founded in 1886 and football began play in 1904. No teams were fielded in 1917 and 1918 due to World War I. There was also a two-year hiatus from football action during World War II in 1943 and 1944. The Mocs have an all-time record of 459-471-32 (.494) and have won 10 conference titles.

CAPTAINS CHOSEN FOR 2010
Following the Spring Game, coach Huesman announced the captains for the 2010 season as voted on by the players. Seniors Chris Harr and Buster Skrine and junior B.J. Coleman were chosen by their teammates to lead this year's team.

STARTERS AND LETTER WINNERS RETURNING/LOST
The Mocs return a total of 41 lettermen from the 2009 campaign. There are 25 coming back on the offensive side of the ball, while 14 return on defense. Two specialists will also return for the 2010 season. There are 18 starters returning, including nine on offense, seven on defense and two on special teams. See page 13 of the game notes for a full rundown on the starters and lettermen who are returning and lost from last season.

HUESMAN, EHRENFELD ARE FORMER TEAMMATES OF THREE MOCS DADS
Head coach Russ Huesman and assistant coach Russ Ehrenfeld are both former Mocs football players. Huesman played from 1978-81 while Ehrenfeld was a Moc from 1977-80. Both of the Mocs coaches were teammates of Bryon Coleman (1977-80), who is the father of sophomore QB B.J. Coleman, Tim Dockery (1981-83), who is the father of freshman OL Hunter Dockery, and Mike Nease (1980-83), who is the father of freshman OL Steven Nease. Nick Davison's father, Mark, was also a classmate of Huesman and Ehrenfeld at UTC, but he did not play football.

MAJORITY OF THE MOCS ARE FROM TENNESSEE AND GEORGIA
Of the 87 members currently on the Mocs' roster, 78 list Tennessee (53) or Georgia (25) as their home state. That means 89% of the roster is from Tennessee or Georgia, including 60% from Tennessee and 40% from Georgia. Three Mocs are from Florida and Alabama. There is one representative each from California, North Carolina and Virginia.
