Joseph Winship Carpenter, 23, of Signal Mountain, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010, after a long struggle with bipolar disorder.

Winship was born July 31, 1987, to William Neel and Lane Latimer Carpenter. Winship spent his first 10 years in Papua New Guinea, where his father taught missionary children. The family returned to the U.S. in 1998 and a few months later his father passed away.

In 1999, they settled on Signal Mountain. Winship graduated from David Brainerd Christian School in 2006. He loved football, especially the UT Vols and the Tennessee Titans. He deeply valued Jesus and the Bible and believed God could be called on.

He was a loving son, brother, uncle, and boyfriend.

In Papua New Guinea, the people of Manam Island named Winship, Saragum, after his village grandfather. If anyone wishes to add to the family's fund for the Manam people, they can make donations to the family. The money will be sent to buy necessities for the Manam people.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Dr. W.N. Carpenter, Martha Carpenter Tipton, and Winston Tipton; his father, William Neel Carpenter; his sister, Marie Graham Carpenter; and his niece, Gwenyth Graham Carpenter.

He is survived by his mother, Lane Carpenter; his siblings, Myers (Laura) Carpenter, Parks (Liz) Carpenter, Sarah Carpenter, Rebecca(Patrick) Jemison, Will Carpenter, and Henry Carpenter; three nieces, Lily Kate, Charlotte and Lillian Carpenter; his maternal grandparents, E.D. (Lat) and Lane Latimer, and girlfriend, Brittany Wilkins.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Manam people or a favorite charity.

Services will be private.
