Last week we went downtown for lunch and tried Joe Friday’s Alaskan Coffee House. They are located at 825 Houston St. For some reason I was thinking they were in the Bluff View area, so I got lost – but everyone knows I don’t have a good sense of direction!
What a neat little place! So cozy and inviting. I loved it! It appears to be an old house featuring a small front porch with some outside seating, as well as a small balcony upstairs. Although we did not go upstairs, we were told there were sofas, coffee tables, etc., for customer use.
The menu consists of Breakfast Starters, Sandwiches, Salads and Soups. There is an Espresso Bar and Avalanche Smoothies are also offered.
You can build your own breakfast sandwich choosing from different breads (English muffin, Croissant, Biscuits, Wheatberry Toast, and Bagels), and add from their list of meats and cheese. Prices start at $3.75 and include the egg and cheese.
I started with a cup of Hot Chocolate ($2.85) – Ghirardelli chocolate steamed with milk. What a HUGE cup of delicious chocolate, piled high with whipped cream.
I always want to try the soups and at Joe Friday’s they have a different soup each day. I really want to try the Monday special, Mushroom Brie Bisque, which sounds wonderful. But, since it was Friday, it was Seafood Bisque – rich, creamy and full of small pieces of seafood. I would definitely order this again ($4.75 bowl, $2.95 cup).
I also ordered the Homemade Chicken Salad on a bed of field greens ($8.75). This was far more than I could eat, so I had chicken salad for later. Another tempting salad was the Smoked Salmon ($9.25). Salads are served with thick sliced Italian Bread that appears to have been grilled on the Panini toaster.
Wayne ordered soup and half a sandwich. He opted for the chili (served everyday) and the Club (smoked turkey, smoked ham, Applewood Smoked Bacon with cheese, spring mix, tomatoes, mayonnaise and balsamic vinaigrette ($7.79 for a whole sandwich). Chili was thick, chock full of beans and meat. Wayne really liked it, as well as enjoying the sandwich, which did not skimp on toppings.
Joe’s has a Grab and Growl section on their menu that includes Cinnamon Rolls, Muffins, Cookies and Scones ($1.15 to $3.55), as well as a Kid’s Zone featuring Grilled Cheese and PB&J (both $3.99).
We really enjoyed Joe Friday’s and would go back, but they aren’t open on weekends!
Hours for Joe Friday’s Alaskan Coffee House are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.
