So you only like the little yellow jelly beans with the little white specks, eh? Well, if you are a big time musician, you may be able to have yellow jelly beans with little white specks included in your performance contract each time you play. The part of a musician’s contract that includes weird requests like yellow jelly beans with little white specks is called a rider. I was lucky enough to secure one from a band that will go unnamed but has played on Chattanooga’s biggest stage in the past.

In addition to the common sense items like requesting stage hands for loading in and out equipment and bus parking, this rider had a few unusual items that are worth a laugh. Here are a few:

1. One massage therapist for the day of show, arriving 4 hours prior to show time.
2. For load in of equipment – 2 gallons of bottled water, 1 gallon of 2% milk, 2 boxes of variety pack cereal, 1 gallon orange juice, a half- gallon of carrot juice, Throat-cut Tea, Lipton, Ginseng and Comomile Teas, 1 dozen bagels, cream cheese, and doughnuts, 1 Jar of Jiff or Skippy peanut butter, 1 jar of Smuckers grape jelly, 1 loaf of wheat bread, honey, sugar, lemon, 2 cartons of cigarettes (1-Marlboro Lights, 1 Newport.)
3. For Sound Check – Hot tea and coffee with sugar, honey, lemon, 1 gallon of milk, 2 quarts orange juice, 2 quarts apple juice, 1 quart Evian, 2 quarts cranberry juice, Turkey, Ham, Chicken sandwiches, soup, cracker, chips, cookies, vegetarian dishes for 6 people, 2 quarts carrot juice, 2 boxes of ginseng royal jelly in a honey base, 2 cans of Pringles BBQ & Sour Cream, 1 bottle of Centrum multi-vitamins.
4. A dinner party for 35 people with linen table cloths, china, metal utensils, highest quality seafood, chicken, fish, and pasta, 5 vegetarian meals, and 1 non-dairy meal.
5. Dressing Rooms – 3 cases of assorted imported beer, 2 bottles of White Zinfandel wine, 2 quarts OJ, 1 fruit platter, 3 quarts apple juice, meat & cheese platter, 2 quarts carrot juice, 2 cans of Pringles BBQ & Sour Cream, 15 bottles of water, 12 bars of soap and 12 full size towels, 1 large garment rack, 1 full length mirror, assorted nuts and candy, 1 couch, 1 table and 4 chairs, 2 quarts prune juice, 1 blender, 1 iron and ironing board, 2 loaves of bread.
6. Stage – 2 cases bottled beer, 48 bottled waters, 35 towels, 1 case Power –Ade, four 20 inch fans
7. After show for band – 8 buckets of chicken or fish & chips or 40 Subway sandwiches, 2 cases imported beer, 2 platters of fresh fruit, 2 cases assorted soft drinks and vitamin waters, cookies, chips & salsa, 20 lbs. ice.
8. Miscellaneous – 1 copy machine, 1 coffee machine, 2 local phone books, 3 outgoing phone lines, tubs of ice, 2 pints of Hennessy, Gatorade, professional photographer, hotel rooms.

So, you want to put on a big music festival? The music is just a small part. Security, electrical power, stage construction, sound engineers, and yellow jelly beans add to the madness. To actually get the act on stage playing requires a herculean effort by a lot of people.

One of Chattanooga’s all-time favorites, Overland Express, plays the downtown Sugar’s location Friday and Saturday night. The Chattanooga Music Hall Of Fame group will pack the house, so get there early for a good seat.

Saturday Night, Rhythm & Brews plays host to the 9th Annual Johnny Cash Birthday Bash, featuring Channing Wilson, The Rounders, and the Nathan Farrow Band. This is always a huge night at Rhythm & Brews, so I suggest you buy your tickets now.

My pick-o-the-weekend goes to Cornmeal, playing at Rhythm & Brews this Friday night. This roots and bluegrass jam band brings their full energy music and excitement to town, along with a new CD. As performances go, this one is a “don’t-miss.”

Bob’s pick-o-the week is Here Come The Mummies, appearing tonight (Thursday) at Rhythm & Brews. Want to know more? Just click here.

Riverbend made some announcements today, with news that the Machine will be playing the entire Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon album, along with the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra & Opera on Sunday, June 12. As an added feature, Riverbend has purchased the big laser light show for this performance. The Machine will be joined on stage by a few guests, too. Scheduled to appear is Luther Dickinson, from the North Mississippi All-Stars Duo. Jeff Coffin, the sax player for Dave Matthews Band will also join the Machine for the epic performance.

The North Mississippi All-Stars, featuring Luther and Cody Dickinson will perform on the Bud Light Stage earlier Sunday evening. It won’t be Luther’s first trip to Riverbend, as he appeared with the Black Crowes a couple years ago.

Jeff Coffin Mu’tet will also perform earlier in the evening on the Unum Stage. As mentioned, Coffin is the sax player for Dave Mathews and Bela Fleck & The Flecktones.

In addition, Riverbend has kicked off their new 30th anniversary interactive website, located here. Designed by Papercut Interactive, this website features all you need to know about Riverbend. They also have a new Facebook page, and you can access that here.
