John Miller, a junior at McCallie School, was presented the 2011 Washington College Book Award on Wednesday by McCallie History Chair Michael Woodward.
John received an autographed copy of Dr. Richard Beeman’s “Plain, Honest Men: The Making of the American Constitution.” Dr. Beeman is a history professor at the University of Pennsylvania. His book was the winner of the George Washington Book Prize and the Literary Award of the Philadelphia Athenaeum.
The Washington College Book Award recognizes a high school junior who has produced outstanding written work in the field of history.
It is intended to encourage intellectual excellence in the study and understanding of history. Rob Page, a 1997 McCallie graduate and member of the Class of 2001 of Washington College, first alerted McCallie administrators to this opportunity.
John is a boarding student from Fort Wayne, Ind., and is the son of John and Lisa Miller. He was nominated for the award by his Advanced Placement U.S. history teacher Dr. Woodward.
“John is a student in every possible use of the word,” Dr. Woodward said. “He is already writing on a graduate school level and is one of the best students I’ve ever had.”
Washington College is in Chestertown, Md.
