We finally made our trip to the Urban Stack at 12 West 13th St. I kept putting it off because all everyone talked about were the burgers and since I stay away from bread, I stayed away. I love burgers, just can’t have the bread. They have quite a few items for people that do not include bread.

They are located just off Market Street; you can see St. John’s from the front of the restaurant, but it sort of “sneaks” up on you. You’re looking around and suddenly you’re in front of it without realizing it’s there.

The menu starts with Appetizers, Bar Snacks & Salads and this is where I ordered my entire meal. We started off with the Smokin’ Hot Pimento Cheese Dip. The menu description is “sharp yellow and white cheddar cheeses, roasted red pepper, bacon and smoked jalapeno served hot with house-cut potato chips” - $7.99. Had I known this was going to be so good, I would have ordered two – one to share with Wayne and one for my meal! The cheese was hot, gooey, and spicy and the chips were warm and crisp, not at all greasy. I would make a trip back just for this!

For the rest of my meal I ordered a cup of the 3 Little Piggies Chili ($4.50 cup/$6.99 bowl) and Grilled Chicken Wings ($9.99). The chili is “homemade with Benton’s bacon, ground pork, chorizo, beef”, veggies and chilies. It wasn’t bad, but just OK for me. Maybe it was that I liked the pimento cheese so well, I felt let down with the chili. The wings are billed as “jumbo” and they are larger than most I have ever been served. You can get them with several sauces, but I got mine without. I wanted to taste that smoky flavor. They were delicious flavor and extremely moist on the inside. I would order them again. They were also served with some of their homemade cucumber Fire & Ice Pickles which seemed to be a cross between “heat and sweet”. I usually don’t like sweet pickles, but these were really good.

They have two pages of burgers and Wayne chose the Gourmet Bacon Cheeseburger. This is “American Kobe-style Waygu beef, bacon-onion compote, lettuce and gruyere and blue cheese sauce”, priced at $10.99. He enjoyed the large burger (brought part of it home). Sides are not served with any of the burgers, so that’s from $2.50 to $5 more. I feel at the burger prices, a side should be served. Wayne ordered the house-cut fries with Chipotle Ketchup ($2.50). They were good, but for my part, I like them more crisp. I’m not certain there was enough difference in this beef and the regular Angus beef to warrant paying $3 more. It didn’t taste any different to me.

I did try one of their Specialty Drinks – the High Tea ($6). It was a little small, but was quite good. “Homemade orange-mint tea mixed with fresh sweetened juices and spiked with bourbon.” Maybe I could use up some of my homegrown mint!

All dressings are house-made and they use locally grown and raised products as much a possible. Bread and buns are from Niedlov’s. Other interesting burgers are New Mexico Green Chili Cheeseburger, Good Day, Sunshine (bacon, fried egg, cheese), and the New Yorker (pastrami, coleslaw, swiss). Under the Specialty section they have a Vegan on Shrooms, Jive Turkey and Asian Q. Burgers are priced from $6.99 for the Big Cheese to $11.99 for the Hercules. I thought one of the sides, Gouda Creamed Corn, was intriguing, but it was also $5!

The Urban Stack offers “Five Dollar Shakes” created from Clumpies Ice Cream – Banana Foster, Orange Creamsicle, Triple Berry, Strawberries & Cream and S’mores.

We definitely plan a return visit to the Urban Stack and I KNOW I will be getting the pimento cheese!

Hours for the Urban Stack are Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. until midnight and Friday and Saturday until 1 a.m. They are another locally owned restaurant.
