Weather Didn’t Stop Lions Labor Day BBQ And Raffle

  • Tuesday, September 6, 2011

"Signal Mountain Club Lions played like ducks on Labor Day and drive thru BBQ was the order of the day," according to Lion Jerry Pala. Labor Day BBQ chairman Frank Zarhobsky said "You have to play the hand that is dealt. Even if it is blowing winds and driving rain the BBQ will not stop."

Signal Mountain Lions cooked 1,200 pounds of BBQ, had hundreds of bratwurst, hamburgers, and hot dogs ready to be grilled and the funnel cake cooker was primed and ready to go. But would anyone show when skies opened up and dumped record amount of rain on the mountain?

Lion John Rose, who is a veteran of 46 years of Lions BBQ, said it was the worst weather ever for a BBQ event. The 90th birthday ceremonies for Charles Coolidge were canceled and it was too wet to set up to make funnel cakes.

But that didn't stop the good people of the mountain from coming out to get the best BBQ on the mountain, Mr. Pala said. Lions operated a drive through line and people didn't have to leave the comfort of their cars. Lions brought the BBQ to them as they drove past the pavilion. Some hearty mountain people braved the wind and rain and sat under the pavilion to eat their lunch and enjoy a piece of birthday cake.

The BBQ sold out by 2 p.m. and Lions stored away their equipment until next 4th of July.

"We want to thank all those good people on the mountain that support the Lions activities. It is events like this that make this the best place to live," Mr. Zarhobsky said.

The Lions Labor Day Car Raffle was conducted in abbreviated form. The winning ticket belonged to Joan Withers, a resident of Signal Mountain who happened to be out of town on the day of the contest drawing. Ms. Withers was overwhelmed with the announcement and will be returning soon.

Forty-six other prizes were drawn as well, Mr. Pala said. "If the winners want to contact me, at 886-5907 or my email address, I can arrange to get them the prize. Otherwise I will send them by mail."
