Helen Butler Scannell, 85, of Lakesite, died peacefully Saturday, April 7, 2012 with her family by her side.

Helen was born in Hurlock, Md., to Arthur J. Butler and Ruth Colbourn Butler. She received her RN from the Wilmington General Hospital School of Nursing. She started her career caring for Polio victims during the Polio Epidemic. She and her family moved to Lakesite in 1965. When the nest was empty, she resumed her career at Moccasin Bend. She retired from Johnson Mental Heath as director of the Greer House in 2004.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Dan Scannell; three children, Cheryl “Cherie” Yates (Foster) of Chattanooga, Danny Scannell (Jen) of Burlington, Ma., Dianne Sterchi (Charles) of Sale Creek; a sister, Phyllis Johnson of Preston, Md.; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, in the Legacy Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Mitch McClure officiating. 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the charity of your choice.
