Officials on Thursday announced the opening of a new Lexia After-School Program at Carver Community Center, 600 N. Orchard Knob Ave.
This program will be available free to all youths.
The Lexia After School Program has been made possible through a generous donation by Miller & Martin, and a partnership between Chattanooga Parks and Recreation, the Gang Task Force and the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga.
Lexia After-School Program provides children grades first through sixth the opportunity to participate in a program that has a strong reading component, officials said. The program takes place Monday through Thursday from 3-5 p.m. - a critical time to engage school-aged children in structured activities, it was stated.
Officials said, "Our trained and caring staff creates a safe, supportive environment for the children that attend our program. The Lexia After-School Program complements current school curriculums and strengthens participant’s sense of belonging in the communities in which they live.
"Participants will enjoy a wide range of activities; homework assistance, healthy snacks, supervised computer use, life skills and team building along with recreational activities including sports, fitness, arts and culture, special events, fun and educational field trips. Participants will earn points for attendance, improvement, good citizenship and behavior, volunteering, attending life skills and youth development sessions."
