Latham Scores Late Goal In UTC Soccer Loss To ETSU

  • Sunday, October 5, 2014

UTC junior Clare Latham (Cordova, Tenn.) scored in an open net Sunday afternoon in the final seconds in a Southern Conference women’s soccer match at Finley Stadium against East Tennessee State, but the Bucs would come away with a 5-1 win. Chattanooga falls to 1-10-1 overall and 0-3-0 in league play while ETSU improves to 11-3 on the year and 3-1-0 in SoCon action.

Chattanooga freshman Samantha Hogan outraced the defense and managed to get a foot on the ball before charging ETSU keeper Anna Yancey could get to the ball.

Her shot bounced off the keeper’s leg and to the middle of the field where Latham picked up the shot and eluded her own defenders to drive home her second goal of the season in the 90th minute.

The Bucs scored three goals in the first half beginning with a shot from Sarah Zadrazil who went one-on-one with UTC keeper Hannah Dunn (Cookeville, Tenn.) to make it 1-0 at the 1:37 mark of the game. Simona Koren who assisted on the first goal, scored her 10th of the year taking a pass from Zadrazil from the right side to put ETSU up 2-0 in the 24th minute.

East Tennessee’s third goal came just before the half off a pass from Zadrazil from the near post to the middle of the box and Hannah Short increased her SoCon-best goals to 17 on the year to make it 3-0 at the 40:03 mark of the game.

ETSU added another two goals in the second half. Alexa Passingham was able to bend her corner kick in the 50th minute into the far top corner of the goal to make it 4-0. The final goal came in the 67th minute when Zadrazil charged down right side of the field. Dunn came out of the net to challenge her and she sent a pass to the far post to Thomai Vardali to make it 5-0.

Dunn grabbed seven saves on the day while ETSU’s keepers combined for six. The Bucs outshot UTC 22-10 with a 12-7 shots on goal advantage.

UTC returns to action Friday night at UNCG. The game will kick off at 7 p.m.
