John Blair
John L. Blair, 100, died on Sunday, December 28, 2014.
John was born in Smyrna, Ga., and moved to Chattanooga during his teen years. He entered the Army and served as a Corpsman in North Africa and Italy during World War II. Upon returning to Chattanooga, he met and married Christine Finley, the love of his life for 56 years. John and Christine owned and operated Agnew Hardware Company on Frazier Avenue. They were members of First Centenary UMC for over 60 years. John was a charter member of the Northside Civitan Club and remained an avid club member for over 50 years. He was also a longtime member of the Chattanooga Half-Century Club. He loved to garden and grew orchids at their home on Signal Mountain. Shortly after Christine’s death in 2002, John moved to Hickory Valley Retirement Community and attended Tyner UMC. While at Hickory Valley, he loved to play bingo and bridge weekly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry LeRoy and Adelaide Mable, wife, Christine Finley, brothers Leroy, Robert and Eugene, and sisters, Mary Louise, Mable and Frances Barge.
John is survived by his sister, Lillian Nicholson, Villa Rica, Ga., sister-in-law, Reva Blair, Chattanooga, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 12-2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Highway 153 followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the Chattanooga Memorial Gardens.
