Chattanoogan Eric Roddy, a 2012 Baylor School graduate and senior at Sewanee, has been named a finalist for the 2016 Rhodes Scholarship.
Widely considered to be one of the world's most prestigious scholarships, Rhodes Schoalrs receive full financial support to pursue a degree or degrees at the University of Oxford in England. The value of a Rhodes Scholarship generally exceeds $50,000 per year, depending on the academic field and the degree (bachelor's, master’s, doctoral) chosen.
Selections for the scholarship are made each year on the
Saturday before Thanksgiving.
If chosen, Roddy will be one of 32 Rhodes Scholars chosen out of a field nominated by more than 300 colleges and universities.
At Sewanee, Roddy has been a scholastic leader as well as a champion tennis player and is one of only ten students chosen by the university's Bonner Leader program, which allows students to earn work-study pay while engaging in community service. He established and taught an ACT-prep class at Grundy County High School, working with rural teens who hope to attend college. He has taken advantage of Sewanee's Summer in Spain program and internships offered by the Office of Career and Leadership Development, and has a paid position as publisher for the Miami Dolphins page on
