Garris Wooten
A man charged with robbing Markman's Jewelers near Hamilton Place Mall on April 8 and spraying the four employees in the store with pepper spray talked incoherently during a preliminary hearing on Tuesday.
Garris Wooten, 27, was placed on a rear prisoner seat during his case heard by General Sessions Court Judge Clarence Shattuck.
He had been taken for evaluation after he exhibited erratic behavior following his arrest.
Police said Wooten entered the store dressed in black and with his face painted white.
He ordered that jewelry be placed in bags. He asked, "Who's going to help me out with my bags?" an employee said.
Police said he gathered up some $1 million in merchandise.
But he was quickly apprehended.
An employee said the four workers were huddled together with their backs to him when he sprayed them with pepper spray. He said, "It was like the worst burning, and it wouldn't go away."
He said taking a shower made the pain worse, but it was better by the next morning.
Charges were bound over against him on aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.
