Longtime Teacher And Football Coach At Hixson High School

Coach George Stephen Underwood, 73, of Hixson, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 18, 2017. 

George was born and raised in Chattanooga, to the late George and Thelma Underwood.  George was a 1961 graduate of Hixson High School where he excelled as a member of the football team. He was a 1966 graduate of Tennessee Tech and received his master’s degree from the University of Chattanooga.  George served over 39 years in the Hamilton County School System.  He taught at Tyner Junior High for 8 years and Hixson High School for over 30 years.  He was coach of the Hixson High School football team for many years.  He also served as coach for the track team and girls basketball.  He served as the advisor for the Hixson Key Club for many years.   Coach was inducted in the Hixson High School Hall of Fame in 2004.  George attended Hixson United Methodist Church.  

George is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carolyn Bridges Underwood; children, Stephen D. (Stacy) Underwood and Stephanie (Thomas) Lawson; grandchildren, Nicholas and Hayden Underwood, Andrew and Oliver Lawson; sister, Sandra (Lawrence) Schnur; and a niece, Kris.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, and 12-2 p.m. on Sunday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. 

A Celebration of Life service for George will follow at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22, at the North Chapel with Dr. Greg Martin officiating.  Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens. 

The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to Avalon Hospice at 7625 Hamilton Park Drive, Suite # 79, Chattanooga, TN 37421. 

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN.
