Sale Creek Beats Columbia Academy, 3-1; Needs One Win To Reach State Again

Lady Panthers Claim Region 3-1A Volleyball Title, Improve To 35-6

Wednesday, October 10, 2018 - by special to The Chattanoogan.com

Sale Creek rocked and rolled Tuesday night in the Region 3-1A volleyball tournament at Columbia Academy. Not even the long trip to Columbia, Tennessee, bothered the Lady Panthers.

First, Sale Creek defeated Community, 3-0, with scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-14 in the semifinals. The Lady Panthers beat Community, 3-0, in last year’s regional title game.

In the championship match, the Lady Panthers (35-6) got past host Columbia Academy, 3-1, by the scores of 25-17, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-20.

Columbia Academy whipped Marion County, 3-0, to reach the title match.

The two wins move Sale Creek to within a victory of earning its third state appearance in the TSSAA state tournament in Murfreesboro next week.

That win will have to come against East Robertson in the Sectionals on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Sale Creek High School. East Robertson lost to Watertown, 3-0, in the Region 4-1A championship match. Columbia Academy goes to Watertown.

The Lady Panthers beat Gordonsville to reach the state tournament in 2017 and defeated Red Boiling Springs to punch their ticket to Murfreesboro in 2016.

Sydney Gibson (24) and Madysun Steele (17) combined for 41 kills against Columbia Academy and Jayda Perry had a big hand in a lot of those smashes with 51 assists. Avery Cox recorded 30 digs and Steele added 20.

Gibson, Steele and Cox were selected to the all-tournament team.

Gibson registered 13 kills in the semifinal match, Perry had 28 assists and Cox finished with 18 digs.

Bill Bennett Was One Of The Best Gentlemen In Politics - And Response (5)

In an era of political haughtiness and ego, we should recognize the life example of public service demonstrated by Hamilton County Assessor Bill Bennett. As I told my friend Bill many times, he and former Governor Winfield Dunn were the best “gentlemen” I knew in politics. He was kind, humble and honest. To honor his legacy, we should all try to carry ourselves a little more ... (click for more)

There are a whole lot of reasons I ought to go to hell. It is by the saving grace of an Almighty God that I already have been assured of a place in heaven but, to be real honest, I think even my eternal Savior had reason for pause when it comes to my ‘Christmas Sheep Caper.’ I believe if you recognize a wrong and ask for God’s forgiveness, things work out.
