Planning Commission Sides With Short-Term Vacation Renter Over Neighbors

Wednesday, October 10, 2018

The Planning Commission has sided with a would-be short term vacation renter, who was opposed by some of her neighbors.

The vote was 7-5 to recommend approval for a request by Ann Campbell. She said she wanted to begin renting one room of her four-room house on Turtle Lane at Ooltewah.

She said she contacted her close neighbors and they had no problems.

However, a number of residents of the neighborhood came to the commission in protest. They said they did not know what kind of persons could be introduced into their quiet neighborhood by the rental program.

County Commissioner Chester Bankston had a quick motion to deny, which got a second.

However, member Mary Kay Hyatt spoke in favor. She said she was not so fearful of who might be renting and said many people want to come to Chattanooga to tour it and enjoy its amenities.

The case goes to the zoning committee of the County Commission on Nov. 14. Commissioner Bankston heads the panel.

Eminent Domain And Property Taxes

There is understandable anger and resistance to TVA's sudden land grabbing in Meigs County. Surely the various governments in this area already own enough land to meet all their needs for a long time to come, and surely some of that land would be perfectly satisfactory for TVA's proposed new power center. But, as with the local animal welfare groups and their inability or unwillingness ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: Quit Embarrassing Us

Ever since I got word that a new Publix grocery store will be built on South Broad Street I have been excited. And every time our city Zoning Appeals Board seemingly does everything within its power to kill the project it is increasingly an embarrassment, a kerfuffle that has no logical explanation and sadly kowtows to a small minority that is flat-out wrong. On Wednesday the ... (click for more)
