Lee Men Fall To Palm Beach Atlantic 86-82

  • Saturday, November 10, 2018
An offensive rebound and a defensive stop propelled the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish past the Lee men's basketball team in the closing moments of an 86-82 battle at Walker Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Michael McGuirk poured in a career-high 26 points on 6 of 7 shooting from the 3-point line for the Flames. The athletic guard also grabbed nine rebounds in the loss.

With eight seconds left the Flames were down two and called a timeout to draw up a play. Head Coach Bubba Smith dialed up a baseline cut play to McGuirk who slid past the defender but saw his lay-up fall just off the rim.

Palm Beach Atlantic's Paxton Wilson sealed the win with a pair of foul shots and was a perfect 6 of 6 from the charity stripe.

Ryan Montgomery, Cody Jones and Quay Kennedy each had 12 points for the Flames.
As a team Lee shot 50 percent from the team and were on fire from deep hitting 11 of 22 triples.

Despite the hot shooting the Flames shot themselves in the foot with 25 turnovers. The Sailfish were guilty of just 15.

"We want to be efficient offensively but we hang on hat on making effort plays and we didn't do that this weekend," said Smith. "We have to mature and learn from these games. The effort tonight was good enough to get us close and good enough to get us beat. That being said we will learn from this and I think we need to look at each and think how can I make my teammates better and that takes place through toughness and competing in practice so we are anxious to get back to work and improve."

Palm Beach held a 36-32 advantage on the glass but really damage on the offensive boards holding a 16-9 edge.

Colton Blevins pitched in nine points and dished off three assists while Kentrell Evans stepped up with six points and six assists as he saw extended minutes when starting point guard Parker Suedekum went down hard in the first half and did not return.

De'Ondre Jackson and big man Andrew Moemeka led a balanced scoring attack for the Florida club with 16 points each. Moemeka wreaked havoc on the offense glass with eight rebounds. Jules Jasmin had 15 points and Wilson finished with 11.

As a club PBA shot 45.3 percent from the field and just 3 of 15 from beyond the arc but did some damage at the foul line, converting 25 of 31 (80.6 percent).

The Flames fall to 0-2 on the young season after finishing the Gulf South/Sunshine State Challenge with two narrow loses. Lee will get back to work on Wednesday as they host North Georgia at 8 p.m.
